Aircon compressor noisy
« on: 11 June 2008, 08:20:37 »

I've got a 2000 prefacelift 3.0 MV6.

In the last few days I've noticed a noise coming from the Air con Compressor.  :( I'm fairly certain thats whats making the noise as pressing the Eco button makes the clicking sound go away.

Just did a quick search on e-bay to see what sort of a bill to expect and found item 260221286684  :o :o :o :o £600 just for the part. I bet its even more from VX  >:(

Its not worth spending a £1K to repair it  :'(

Often a clicking compressor means you are on the threshold between enough and not enough gas, so it clicks on and off.

I would whizz it in to an aircon specialist to check for leaks and refill.

I had very similar on a Mazda.

I hope you are right. I had a Mondeo a few years ago and shortly after the compressor started clicking it failed altogether  :-/

I had similar issues with noise when my last omega required a air con re-charge.If you have insufficient coolant the compressor will not correctly engage and maybe thats the noise you are getting. It would quiten if the Eco button was pressed as this disengages the aircon.
As above get the sytem checked for leaks by a specialit and then get a full charge replaced and hope that solves the problems for you..expect max £80=00 for the work, and that is top  price.

Lets hope it is just low on gas and a full re-charge does the job.

An update on this: My local garage has checked the air con gas and found it was slightly low. He reckoned it should be 950 but was only 750. So hopefully this means it was low enough to cause the clicking in the compressor but just high enough to keep working.

Now its fully recharged for £60. Fingers crossed the clicking doesnt return  :y

Andyb: Thanks for the link. I'll definitely bookmark it in case the problem re-occurs  :y

Yes but, it must have been sealed (true of any of the major aircon items) the minute it left the car (a couple of whittled down wine corks works well) as they are almost impossible to flush out and wont tolerate any dust or grit in them
