Rear diffs?
« on: 24 June 2008, 20:45:59 »

Are facelift rear diffs different on different models?  I have a customer possibly after a rear diff for his 2.2 16V petrol manual and I have a diff for a 2.6 petrol auto does anyone know if they are the same?

Thanks, Dave.

I'm no hot-shot with the EPC but AFAICT :

The EPC lists 4 diffs for the 2.2 and 6 for the 2.6, but doesn't stste if manual or auto .. just uses the ident labels... FU,GR,FG, GP  the addition 2.6 ones are DX, GM .. the part numbers for the FU's etc are the same ....

so some "could" be the same, but if, for example and I don't know if this is how it works ... F= manual and G = auto then the part numbers are different

not a lot of help is it

There's a bit of info on this thread http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1214205190.

It implies that the 2.0 manual and 2.5 outo had the same diff ratio (3.9). So, it may well be the case that 2.2 manual and 2.6 auto were also the same. Either way, it's an indication that the two setups are closely matched and that, even if the ratio is not the same, it'll be close.

I'm sure it would work, but you might risk having a slightly different ratio at the end of it. If you're still concerned I guess try and see if you can find any markings on the two diffs - or rotate the input shaft and count the turns for 10 revolutions of the output shafts, then divide by 10 to get the ratio.

2.2 are as follows:

Auto 4.22
Manual 3.9

2.6

Auto 4.22
Manual 3.9

So, as you can see, they are the different

Thanks for that i'll let him know that they are different.  What would happen if he were to fit the 2.6 Auto diff to his 2.2 manual would it work or would it all end in trouble lol?

Thanks, Dave.

Thanks, Dave.

He would just see slightly higher engine RPM at a given speed. Might even improve acceleration as it'd be lower geared. Fuel economy might suffer a  little I guess. It wouldn't cause any major problems though.

I recall talk of the 4 pots having a different propshaft flange so you might need to swap the flange on the diff input shaft.

2.2 has a higher ratio, but any diff should fit. If you will use one from 2.6 car will have higher max speed, but will accelerate slower.
