Try pulling selected fuses?
Maybe pull HRW fuse and any other non essentials and see if this cures it, then progressively replace them until the fault shows up again.
Obviously it's not lights, horn, wipers (though thinking on it could be a self parking issue with wipers - does it happen after the wipers have been in use?)

Hmm try this, look down the side of the battery and you will see 2 wiring connectors clipped to a bracket, lift them out of the way and you will see the brake pipes from the abs unit ,study this very carefully where the wires rest on it and check the wires for chaffing
found a few with this fault which eventually burns out the loom!!!
not saying it is the faut you ave but it maybe!!

Thanks will check 2morrow.

Pull the HRW relay, just in case. Seen a CDL motor do same thing as well.[/quote]

TB, Talk to me about the CDL motor, the reason I ask is I allways dead lock the car. when the Battery is flat I can not undead it (I know about turning the key really hard while holding the handle bit), but it will not un dead lock. end up having to pop the bonnet from underneath then jumping to unlock.

Is the CDL motor separate to Central locking motor, if its not letting me in, could this be a jammed motor draining the battery?

This may be a red herring, but I had a Carlton once that flattened the battery every 2 hours, turned out to be a faulty ignition switch.

I know the feeling :(

Yea, I did read your bit, but my TD not a FaceLift, in any case I cant see 700ma killing a fully charged Battery in a couple of hours.
Pull the HRW relay, just in case. Seen a CDL motor do same thing as well.

Seems that TB's done it again, Pulled the relay, and touch wood, hasn't happened since. well done TB.

Well it was fine for a few weeks after pulling the HRW relay (still out).

But over the last 24 hours its killed the Battery 3 times again.

Last night left the car about 2 hours, dead. Measured the Battery 1.5 V, dicounect 4.7 V, (dead battery).

Before I jumped it, I had a bit of a feel around the engine for posible causes (2.5TD), noticed the alloy top cover inlet side was quiet warm, thinking 'cars not run for a couple hours' so I touched the exhaust manifold, warm, but you can comfortable hold onto it, touched the top alloy cover exhaust side, Hot in fact too hot to touch for more than a few seconds!

Starting to think now 'Glow Plugs' (please tell me if Im going of the beaten track here).

Not knowing much about these engines, where are the Glow Plugs situated and what would cause them to switch on after the engines be switched off?

Bugger!
I don't know this engine but typically the plugs will be on the cylinder head to preheat the cylinders.
If they are on they are high current and will knock the stuffing out of you battery very quickly.
Easiest way to isolate them might be to disconnect at the plugs (make sure you wrap up any bare ends to prevent a short.
I'd expect that in this weather the engine will start OK without the plugs connected, you'll maybe need to churn it a bit more on the starter.
Causes?
The plugs will be driven by a relay which could be sticking, there's also likely some control circuits (to control pre heat time) but I'd always suspect relay first.

Ok just had a quick look for the GPlug relay in both boxes,  No joy.

Anyone know the relay (or fuse) number for the Glow Plugs?
