bmw engine?  If you let it overheat that much, there is a significant chance of head damage.

Worth investing in waterpump (about £50 pattern part for those iirc), and seeing if that cures. If so, lucky escape :y

easy job, viscous is a pita (left hand thread), and aux tensioner (remove top damper bolt, hold the black metal plate with molegrips).

Good to hear of a fellow South Walian 'tractor' owner ....
I've experienced similar problems with mine, especially when towing our caravan. Take a look at the rad too - make sure there's no debris within the matrix. If you need a replacement rad, (and they don't come cheap), I've got one here.

You say you were heading to Bromyard Gala - are you going to the Welland Steam Rally in three weeks time?
We're planning on going - whatever, send me a 'PM' - help readily given !!

There's a pdf Engine manual on here somewhere. It's for the Range Rover, but it's the same lump.  I downloaded it and printed it off, but I can't remember where it is on here.

Anyone know where the link is ???

As for head damage, on two separate 2.5td's I've managed to overheated them so much that they shut down.
One of these occasions I had no option but to limp it home so this happened 4 or 5 times in 8 miles. Found the cause of the leak, fixed it, re-filled with coolant and fired up the engine. Ran sweet as a nut (still can't understand that saying !)  Hopefully you'll find the same.

Believe me..if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

Main belt - make a note of it's routing BEFORE removing.

Air con. belt - can't help 'cos mine's not fitted, sorry. There must be some sort of tensioner somewhere, maybe The Boy can help on this.
Can't the main belt be released without disturbing the air con. belt? (I'm sure the main belt can be left to hang behind the air con. belt).

Yep, Haynes manual is of no help for the 2.5TD engine.

Aircon belt tensioner adjustment is behind the plastic cap on the tensioner wheel. You should be able to prise that off with a small screw driver. I think it's a 13mm nut on the concentric adjuster wheel.

Yes i noticed that the fan had some chunks out of it perhaps this would
alter the cooling volume .
