Misting up too easily
« on: 05 July 2008, 13:39:37 »

The GLS windscreen mists up too easily IMO when it's raining. The only way to clear it, is by having the aircon running and the heat blowing on the windscreen.

There is also a faint coolant smell in the car, BUT I'm not losing any at all, and carpets are not wet etc, so I'd be surprised if it's the matrix  ::)

Obvious first port of call would be blocked scuttle and soggy pollen filter but I bet you've checked that already.

TIS Field Remedy 244559887376
Screen misting up on long journeys.

Cause - Too much damp air being emitted by front seat passenger.
Solution - tell her to take a breath occasionally.

It does rather point to a failing heater matrix James. Had the same problem on a Carlton :'( :'(.

I've had this problem on a Monza. The heater matrix had a tiny pinhole leak that did not noticeably affect the coolant level, and there were no drips or wetness on the carpet, but coolant was being sprayed out as a fine mist. It then condensed on the windscreen, misting it up.

your wording sort of implys you only turn on the air con to clear the wind screen? Is that the case? The car will mist up quicker with ac off all the time. But any more than that there is damp coming in from somewhere, defo.

Also.. Check that the recirculation flap is working properly and not recirculating damp air.

I have similar behaviour on my Elite (saloon).  My estate doesn't mist up at all in the same way.

I was advised to check the exhaust ports in the boot - clear in my case (boot is empty) , but may be worth checking on yours.
