2.5V6 won't start
« on: 24 July 2008, 16:59:59 »

Hi. Went out to the car the other day, would not start, turned over but not firing. Tried a brand new coil pack this morning, still no joy. There is no spark at the plugs. Any ideas???

As above paperclip test it first. See if any codes come up. Code 19 relates to crank sensor.

Is it getting fuel ?

Thanks Gents, done paperclip test, came up with 144 31 as usual, plus 74 (airflow sensor Hi voltage) It gave the same codes before I changed the coilpack. I know it looks like I have forgotten to connect something, but I have had a very very good look. The coilpack was brand new, if it was from a scrapyard I would suspect it was faulty. If it was the ECU, would there be a different code?
As for crankshaft sensor, maybe worth a try.

if it gave the same codes before then its something in the dismantle, rebuilt process.

Have you checked the routing for ignition leads as the dont really follow a logical pattern at dis pack end ? I have a diagram i alsways follow but its at home and me in office....

I made a diagram and followed it so I know the leads are right, in any case there is no spark at the plugs.  :-X

Fuel, good point, although I am not sure how to check, it certainly has a full tank, but no excessive petrol smell. Is there a test?

Yes disconnect a fuel line and try cranking it........should pee petrol out  :y

Or slightly better.......get someone to crank it while you listen in the boot (take the carpet out first and take off the plate on the boot floor covering up the fuel pump) you will be able to hear the pump if its running  :y

BTW how did you test for no spark? You didnt lie the plug on the cam cover and crank it did you?? Coz if you did the cam covers are plastic and wont give you an earth  :-/

If there's genuinely no spark lack (or otherwise) of fuel is a red herring ---- need to establish a spark first

OK Thanks, will test for fuel. I used a strobe light to test for a spark.
And yes I do realise the fuel issue is incidental because there is no spark.
