engine management light on 2
« on: 28 July 2008, 18:49:21 »

hi there i have a problem with my 2000 2.2 auto . the engine managment light has come on a few times and then gone out, it only happens now and then and does'nt seem to effect the car at motorway speeds but the other day i pulled up to a set of lights and the light came on and the car started jerking back and forth and then pulled off normally and then the light went out  :(

i can't afford the ninety quid the stealers want for a tech 2  session so any ideas?

thanks ryland

Anything other than finding out the codes could end up a false economy.  There are common problems with certain sensors but no guarantees that changing them will sort the problem so could end up a false economy.

You can try the pedal trick - although not convinced it works on the 2.2.

Press and keep pressed down the accelerator and brake pedals.  Then turn the ignition on to position 2.  Watch the dash for the engine management light flashing.  If it flashes count the flashes and report back the code.

If that doesn't work you could try and get ahold of a cheapo tech 2 off ebay although I can't advise which ones will work with your car - mabye someone else can advise one.

Other option is to simply clean the camshaft sensor located at the front of the engine in between the cams, you should see a plug coming out the top/front of the engine.  You will have to take the timing belt cover and the spark plug cover off to get at it.  Clean the metal part of the sensor and it's mating face and you may find this will sort it.

Best option though is to get the fault codes.

general consensus at the wim day was that 2.2 does
Not have a method of flashing codes. Pedal trick and
Paper clip test nfg. Which only really leaves tech 2
If your near Nottingham or Brackley some members
There can help.

Liverpool  bit far. Bummer.

depth they are i dont know.  Someone will advise i am
Sure. I would try the cam sensor first, its free.
Clean then try it, if no change would it be worth buying
 one? (with a trade club
Card if you can?) Chances are you may need one at
some stage anyway. 4 pot renowned for them.

Hi,
I usually reserve my comments / help suggestions to same cars or engines as mine, but your symptoms are identical to what I had on my 3.2

Problem eventually sorted to a faulty Coil Per Plug unit probably originally caused by oil in plug wells overheating them (caused through leaking cam cover gaskets.)

I have no idea if your engine uses same HT system, but your problem may well stem from ignition missfire, especially if your problem occurs only when engine really warmed up.

Until you can get Tech 2 check or OBD Scanner on it, check out your HT system.

I bought a MaxScan GS 500 scanner. There are lots of others especially if you have a laptop computer available.

yeah, worth pulling a plug  lead, or is it a coil pack on
2.2? They can fill plug wells with oil same as the Vs.
Blocked breathers blow the cam gaskits, the usual
thing. Getting to the end of my knowledge with
these engines tbh. Hope helps.

It is a coil per plug system and could very well be the problem but same symptoms can be brought up from just about any faulty sensor on the car although usually camsensors on the 4 pots.  If it's a question of saving money (which obviously is) the codes need read - too risky and will get very expensive to change parts without definite confirmation of the code.

Have noticed that Argos do scanners for £60 and £100 in the latest catalogue..has anyone tried their 14 day return scheme to this degree?

Buy it, use it, take it back a week later  :D

i changed the plugs yesterday there was no oil in the plug holes but i had the rocker cover gasket done a few months ago and they were full of oil up to the brim  so it could be the coil pack

Give this man - Andy Stockton a call he has a real Tech 2 and knows how to use it and he's in Widnes :y :y :y

http://www.asautocare.co.uk/index.html

mention this site OOF and he should give you a discount

may also be worthwhile letting him check your gearbox for the latest upgrade - see his website
