2.5 TD Auto - Keeps Stalling
« on: 25 July 2008, 17:52:43 »

Start the engine from cold, when at idle RPM is about 650.  Put into drive OK.  Engine begins to warm up idle fluctuates as low as 400 rpm.  Whilst driving, when the engine is warm, go from 2000-3000 rpm to idle and engine stalls.  Put the engine into drive at idle speed and it stalls.  You have to increase revs slightly and put into drive which gives the gearbox a headache.  If you are stationary and turn the wheel or switch on the AirCon, the engine can and does stall frequently.  When the engine stalls there is a noise from the fuel pump, switch of the ignition and switch it back on and the noise has gone.

When on the Motorway the engine performs fine, lots of power and no misfires.  IT's just when you come off the motorway that the engine can stall.

Any ideas?

I don't have a manual, where is the EGR valve?  To get to the pump you have to remove the inlet manifold, it looks a complete sod to do are there any speacial tricks here?

Someone has also suggested to check the battery and alternator conditions.

Thanks for your suggestion

sorry mate thought you had done a earch to find the magic trick, to clean pump purchase can of diesel magic from halfords or similar, get new fuel filter and fill with diesel magic then put on car and turn key this will go straight to pump and clean the internal working oarts,  it will cough and splutter for a fe seconds but just keep t running at about 1400 rpm after 3 or 4 mins take for a drive and see how it is, it may need repeating if you have benn running supermarkety fuels as these seems to gum the pumps up pretty badly other diesel cleaners have been tried but diesel magic seems to be the beast for it  :y

egr is bit between turbo diesel plastics and inlet manifold - you can see pipe coming off and back to exhaust.

pump - remove fuel filter, empty, fill with neat diesel magic, refit and start.

Did the diesel magic trick.  It appeared to work for a while but it's now just the same.

I have completed 4 D magic cycles and the problem is still the same.  I took the car for a run to Bournemouth yesterday (200 mile round trip), changed the filter this morning and put more D magic in. I'm sure it's fuel stavation but how can I check for an electronic fault, if it was an electronic fault where might it be?

Thanks

I've just read about the paperclip test.  I ran the test and it shows code 49 Glow Plug General Error.  What plug type is shown in the paperclip test?  Is it possible to have the idle revs increased via laptop?

49 is nothing to worry about.

Can't remember if idle is adjustable on these. Would need a tech2 to do.  What is the idle speed, and is it steady?

Idle can be anything from 650-500.  When you put into gear, switch on Aircon or turn the steering wheel, it mostly stalls.  On the motorway the car does 110+!

Thanks
