Got the new lump installed and running ( what a relief!). Only glitch so far is that when started she revs at 2000. When I pinch the tube to the idle motor tight she falls to a more normal 600, but hunts a little ( between 600 - 700 revs).  She will hold that OK until the throttle is opened again, then we are back to a 2000 revs idle!

Changed the idle motor, which cured it for all of 5 minutes ... what next ??

Had this a while ago and suspected an air leak.  Cleaned the ICV umpteen times with no cure.  I then swapped the ICV from my old engine and it cured it.  

Is it possible the mechanical idle has been tampered with?  If not then most likely an air leak or the ICV.

Just check that nobody has played with the end stop on the butterflies - these should close completely.  Seems to be a standard bodge on lpg conversions, esp mixer type, to try and fix idle issues by opening these slightly.

Air leak seems most likely. Will swap ICVs and see what that does (old ICV was OK).

The gas system is not the old mixer anymore -- as I recall, James did remove a bolt, or somesuch, strategically placed to stop the butterfly closing. No foreign bodies there now -- but will check for free movement of the butterflies.
