Driving home yesterday in my 2.6 estate when the "Engine" Warning light came on and stayed on (The one that looks like the profile of an Engine)

My Handbook says this is a fault with the Engine electronics or emissions control.

Has anyone experienced this? I know not where to start looking for the problem. The engine still seems to run ok, and nothing appears to be hanging off.

I was planning on driving down to Heathrow Airport tomorrow, so now wondering if I should be looking for alternative transport.

If light remains on you are mean't to seek urgent dealer advice and in the meantime not drive the car except (slowly) to a garage.

Could be just a fault of the system, but on the other hand could be more serious.

If competant at DIY mechanics then do a "paper clip test"

(See Forum Guide at  http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189022687    )   if no Tech 2 available to ascertain fault code(s).  Failing that you should seek advice.   Other expert Omega members will no doubt advise further later .

Paperclip test won't work on a 2.6, but there is a way to flash the codes up which I cant remember the sequence at the moment.

fire the engine. When dash lights go out, car/spanner
Symbol should flash, 4 sets of flashes for 4 digit
Code. Pause and so on, 10 flashes is zero. Constant

AHA, is that the sensor between the pre cat and big
Proper cat converter? If so it is the pre cat issue. Is

I have the same problem, has been reset several times over the past year, seems fine on motorway runs, then as soon as you hit town, it comes back on. If it is the pre-cats then don't change the lamda's like I done as it's a waste of money, you could try some cataclean, but I beleive Bob.dent tried some and never made any change.

Ok, so to be clear for Mr Metro the issue is caused by
The pre cat collapsing or damage of some sort, possibly
Engine oil or some contamination from the engine,
Possibly from removing oil from a plug well or over
Filling the sump? Cats dont like oil and the breather
System is ment to burn excess oil through the engine
But excess can get through and bugger the cat. Or they
Just collapse with age, as i understand it.
 What ever the cause they are not workin to a level
The sensor expects and causes a code. It is not a major
Problem as it is not said to cause an emissions issue
At mot, as the bigger cats still do the job.
 The problem is with the light coming on and possiblly
Hiding other issues. How do you reset the light?

Interestingly, I topped up the engine oil yesterday in response to a display message saying "Engine oil low" (or something like that) And reading an artical posted by MDTM, suggesting that the oil level on the dipstick should be closer to 3/4 rather than 1/2, I duly added a small quantity.
This might be totally unrelated, but I did top up before the warning light appeared! :-?

Yellow sticker on the engine bay saying do not over fill with
Oil as damage to the cat may result.

Ideally all cars should be kept filled up to "Max", but never beyond that as oil can seep through the oil seals and in manual cars contaniminate the clutch plate amoung other things, as well as increasing the oil pressure beyond design criteria; i.e. things will start to leak and possibly blow including excessive oil being forced, unburnt, through the combustion chambers and into the exhaust /cat(s)!  That has been the understanding and teachings for all the cars I have ever worked on!
