EML code 61? EML stays on
« on: 07 August 2008, 11:39:29 »

Hi guys hoping for a bit more advice :y, I had a 2.5 V6 parked for 2 years, decided to put her back on the road after some kind sole drove into the back of my defender and wrote her off ! I've decoked her changed the cam cover gaskets - guide top notch by the way everythings back together and she is running a sweet as a nut but the EML is on permanently ??? did the paper clip test but only gives a 51 then two 61's ?????? 61 being low voltage to fuel tank ventilation anybody got any ideas? or is it possible to reset the eml to off

51 is far more worrying than the 61.  Ignore 61 for just now.  51 is a problem with your ECU.  Advice is to disconnect then reconnect your ECU and see if it disappears.

unscrew the fuel tank plate in the boot and check / clean the connector?

Think there is one just under a steel circular inspection plate.

Codes disappear after 20 or so clean starts, or can be reset with a code reader such as tech2 or cheapo tech2, will be straight back if the problem isnt fixed though.

Maybe all due to battery issues being stood so long, have you used it much yet?

put a new battery on but it hasn't moved off the drive, couple of things though with her being stood for a while, and having oil in the spark plugs I thought it would be a good idea to let some of the oil into the pistons and turn her over by hand to make sure I didn't crack any piston rings, I have also had an issue with the "straw" like vacum pipes one had a hole or two in it so I have taped it up and can retain pressure.

Your code 61 will be the Fuel Tank Purge Valve which is mounted
to the rear of the driver's side cylinder head.

If you have been working on your heads, you may have disturbed the
wires to it, or they may be corroded due to the car parked up on
your front lawn for 2 years.

Inspect the valve and cables. Clean off any corrosion on the contacts
and try again.

As Jimbob suggested try and clear the codes.  Turn the ignition on to position 2 (without starting the car) and wait for the ABS and Airbag light to extinguish.  Turn off, then repeat 25 times.  Hopefully the EML will reset.  If not there is a problem somewhere.
