Thanks gents for all the replies. The reason I'm agonising over this "sealant on bolts business is that there is indeed some blue goo on some of the bolts wjhich could be a Loctite type sealer, they were stiff to remove, and as soon as I loosened one of the rear ones, water oozed from around it. I don't suppose there would be any harm in using some on replacement. I can't see from heights and angles that it could come from anywhere else, other than the bolt hole in the head. There is indeed what looks like a water film around the front oil pipe union and either from the oil cooler at the front or from the thermostat housing, thet doesn't dry out,( I've left as much water in the cooling system as possible.).
I'm just at this moment trying to decide if I want to tackle the oil cooler sealing. I'm getting on in years and creeping around under the car is no fun anymore. Do the oil pipes have to be released from the filter end to remove and reseal the unions and oil filter plate? Isn't there enough give in the pipes to spring out of the way?
How difficult is releasing the oil pipes from filter end. And reading that oil filters fail internally, what's the chance of me damaging the actual filter and causing it to fail by removal stresses, is it worth replacing at this dismantle stage? I've no idea of the cost.
Do I put it back together and go to a garage? Help my decision process lads!
