My car was running cold, I thought stat was stuck open.

I've popped off the stat for a look and it appears to be closed - is it still likely to be faulty stat? If not, what else would cause it?

I hope I didn't wrestle with that b@stard bolt and transfer pipe for nothing

Hang it in a kettle of water and see how hot it needs to get to open. It should need the water to be boiling pretty vigourously before it opens. Sometimes they fail such that they close OK but open early.

Mine did the same until it developed a small water leak at the back of the engine. As soon as I changed the Heater Bypass Valve everything went back to normal.
If the vacuum pipe on the top of the HBV has become dislodged it will have the same effect.

I've still not got the cambelt kit on to fire it up and the oil cooler pipes are also off - but I suspect given how brittle the ends of the plug leads are, it will just fall to bits and burn...

Maybe it would be a good idea to get the ECU temp sensor checked with Tech II as I mentioned before James. The dash panel gauge may be under-reading or the sender faulty. Have you checked the connector? As it was poor fuel economy that prompted you to the conclusion about the thermostat might be worth checking for a vacuum leak if it is not the thermostat.
WRT the Ba**ard bolt I found that the 10mm(?) ratchet ring spanner (as in the Halfords tool kit) spanner (not ratchet handle and socket) fits it perfectly and allows slow but good access. Hope this helps

I've had cool running on two V6's, changing the thermostat has fixed both.

Neither thermostat had a visible defect when removed, I had intended to check in hot water, but like most things, never got around to it.

Too much work to risk putting the original back.
