2.5td oil change

So i have decided mr mechanic is a bit expensive for oil changes and am thinking of doing it myself as its a bit over due.  I have no previous experience (except for a change on my old Sierra years ago. I didnt put it back right and BANG. was a bit off putting to say the least) Anyhow i dont have a torque wrench and ive checked Halfrauds website and they are a good 50 quid.
How important is it to use one? can i get it cheapper else where?

You can get cheaper ones, Halfords is a good buy.

If you're going to do your own oil changes, it will soon pay for itself.

I wouldn't attempt to tighten up the sump plug without a torque wrench.

What didn't you put back right, sump plug or filter? Never used a torque wrench for an oil change but did have to drop the car back down and drive to Halfords for torx sockets when I got under my Elite for the first time and looked at the sump plug!

Don't want to put you off but I did my oil change and two problems on the TD. No 1 you need quite a large socket attached to a long extension to remove the filter, and no 2 watch out that you don't strip the sump plug.

I borrowed a socket from a neighbour for the filter and my sump plug would not tighten up enough, just kept spinning. I reckon the threads were knackered before I went near it. Anyway it held the oil in all but for a small drip but then seemed to seal itself.
Took it to my independant VX dealer after that £37 for oil change, seems worth it to me anyway, and you don't have to get rid of the oil afterwards.

What ever works for you Mick, but you do realise that you could buy 4 metric gallons of semi-synthetic for that money.

Yeah and the old bones don't like it either grovelling about under a car, for the younger one's I think these days.

Also do halfrauds sell the sockets seperatly? cos i hunted through my shed earlier and couldnt find one large enough.

OP's is an earlier one, so has a 13mm bolt, not the 36mm socket.

Be very, very, very, very, very careful on the BMW sump plug, far too easy to strip. Typical BMW junk I'm afraid.

Sealey do cheap OK-ish torque wrenches

with the Sierra i dont think i tightened the filter enough and it ran dry. These cars didnt have an oil low light thing so i hadnt the faintest all the oil had came out of it. So i was faced with a decision. New engine or that shiny Mondeo at the dealers... hmmm what would you choose lol (At the time i really wanted one)

The TD has a more secure oil filter (paper element type)...

Umm yes about that....   you wouldnt be pleased with me then. Nor will me car actually. Thats why i think i should learn to do it myself. I cant afford to get the garage to do it and i have less mechanical knowledge than my dog.

Not sticking to 3k (remember BMW say 4.5k MAX) will cause you massive headaches.

Many regulars here will remember the saga of my beloved Project Tractor last year - a car bought from a member with overheating issues....

Bought in Feb 07, overheated if pushed, and always overpressurised the coolant.  By May, every part of the cooling system had been replaced, still the same.  Then it dawned on us (Omegatoy - who helped extensively with this project - and I) that the issue may be oil blockages - these engines also use oil jets for cooling.  Looking at the history I have (not much before my ownership) showed it was services every 10k.  Cleaned out the oil cured the overheating problem (but not the overpressurising).  Overpressurising as located to a cracked head, caused most likely by overheating.


So, the moral is that tractor owners must keep to the (earlier) service scehdule, or better.  The later 7.5k schedule is like the current 20k petrol schedule - it will damage your engine.

Okay i think i must do it as soon as possible (ive done 10K on this car and the previous owner 7K so its been atleast 17K since any service has been done)

does halfrauds sell the oil filters?
i was planning to do this tomorow so yeah

Also the huge socket for the filter...  is it that or not?
Might have to play around today to see if my extension bar for socket set is long enough
