Hi, my '96 miggy has surface rust starting on the lips of the rear arches. Its not visible unless you kneel down and hasn't gone through or anything.

What would be the best way to prevent them going bad- sand & chuck some hammerite on?

You need to grind the rust out the prime it then get a can of paint in your cars colour and all sorted.will look really bad if u put hammerite on plus the cost of it will be around the same price as a can of paint

Cheers fella, the rust is underneath the arch so isn't visible unless you get under the car though. Just want to stop it getting any worse really. Does Hammerite actually do what it says on the tin?

I can't attempt doing it properly 'cause I know for a fact I would end up cocking up the whole car!

well if u cant see the rust that well u can just wack on some hammerite

  PLEASE DO NOT USE HAMMERITE!!!!!!

It is not the same product as it was 10 years ago and tbh is no better now than putting household gloss in instead!  
If you really want to do something, just rub it back to bare metal, get as much loose rust off as possible and then use a quality metal primer, undercoat and then a topcoat in the cars colour or perhaps a contrasting one.  
Honestly, there are much better ways to treat metal than that crap in a can, sorry but it really is not worth it.

hammerite is fine as i use same sort of thing at work on frames on trucks.But like i side to start of its better to just do the job with the right paint as it will only be 3 or 4 quid more than a tin of hammerite

Unless you remove all the rust 100% it will return and likely quicker then you think!

Painting over anything (no matter what product you use) but clean metal is just a temporary fix.
