Blowers / air con not working !!!
« on: 18 August 2008, 18:53:33 »

Yet another problem with this %&@$ing car.

We did a coolant change with a new header tank yesterday. All went fine except for the fact that trying to run the heater for a few minutes as described in the OOF maintenance guide takes no heed of the fact the heater doesn't come on until after a delay (as far as I can tell).

So I tried running the engine with the heater on full as per the guide - it didn't come on because, I thought, the engine is obviously not warm enough yet and unlikely to warm up stationary for 20 minutes or so. So after ten minutes I give up and complete the rest of the coolant change.

Now, having done the change I thought all was well as the car was behaving fine.

Come this afternoon, driving back from work, I put the heaters on to test them and wait... and wait.... and wait. Nothing. The control panel lights up and all the buttons work (i.e. the correct lights light up). I have now been outside checking fuses F33, F12 and F14 - they are all fine.

Another thread says something about K146 and K34 relays but I've no idea where they are.

I tried setting all temperatures on both dials, and also on LO. Basically, I tried every combination.

If I listen intently I can hear the fan start and stop and I can hear the engine put under load. Changing the fan speed does nothing and there is no discernible output of air from the vents.

As far as I know the car was fine before I did the coolant change. There are no missing hoses.

Could it be an airlock caused by doing the coolant? I'm not convinced of that because why would the fan not try to blow air (hot or cold) even if the heater matrix had no warmth / air con pump wasn't working?

ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Sounds like its either the speed controller for the fan or the fan its self to me.....

My fan went on my 2.2, bearing went stiff......would go if leads from it where shoved on a 12v battery but the speed controller couldnt supply the current to turn it.

If your handy with a voltmeter.....easy to check out....but not so easy to get to  :(

Just tried resetting with Auto and Off; nothing happened.

Don't have user guide / manual (assume you mean the one you download from Vx website?) to hand so don't know if I have to do anything else.

As for the speed controller, seems a bit of a coincidence that the heater was working late last week and now doesn't after changing the coolant and tank.

The fan I think is turning but very weakly. I can certainly hear something start when I turn the climate control on.

I know someone handy with a voltmeter but haven't a clue where the fan is or how you get to it to test it, or what to test on it or what reading you're supposed to get.

Thanks for the help so far!

Anyone know where the relays I mentioned are?

Any other things I can check?

I'm hoping to take the car on holiday to North Wales soon and I dearly need heaters!

One other thing - on the right side of the radiator as you look at the car having opening the bonnet (i.e. the real left side) there is a large diameter hose that we pinched when changing the coolant. When pinching it,  it gurgled the coolant in the header tank which we thought would move the coolant around in case there were any air locks.

Could this have caused a problem?

That should of sorted the 'air lock' problem, I have flushed the coolant a number of times and always squeezed the top hose with the header tank cap of to purge the system which has always worked. Good luck.

Panic over. Thanks for everyone's help.

Before I could get an autoleccy come and have a look at it, I tried the air con reset a fourth and last time and suddenly I have blowers again!

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Just got to watch for problems over next couple of weeks in case it's a symptom of something failing.
