Petrol running from exhaust!
« on: 18 August 2008, 18:38:48 »

Hi all,

I REALLY need some help with my Omega 2.5 V6 Auto.  The car broke down this morning (with the wife driving!) following a spate of spluttering, misfiring and also revs rising and falling irratically.  The management light came on and the car finally died in rush hour traffic!  >:(

After abandoning the car in order to get to work, we went back this afternoon and the car did start but only managed to splutter a short distance on 4 or 5 cylinders, at no more than 20mph, before it gave up again.  I then called the AA who did a few routine checks and he noticed fuel pi$$ing out the exhaust.  Due the exhaust being "sided" I could tell the fuel was coming from the offside bank.

After being towed home I did the paper clip test which has revealed faults 81, 83, 85 & 31.

Please, please help as after deciding to give big Vauxhall's a second chance this one is quickly turning into a nightmare again!  :'(

On a lighter note, crank sensor now sorted thanks to everyone's help on here as fault 19 has disappeared!  :y

Injectors 1, 3 and 5.  Check the injector rail, main injector plug.

Thanks for the speedy reply. But what am I checking for? Do I need to send the injectors away to be checked or is it something that I can do myself? Also can they stick open???  :-[

Check the condition of the plugs to those injectors, and the main injector plug that connects injector rail to loom at back of engine.

Ok many thanks, I have seen from other posts on here that you are quite the techie. so I just look for dodgy/ corroded connectors. Also has anyone seen this before as the amount of fuel dripping from the exhaust was shocking to say the least !!   :o

Also just out of interest it may be worth adding that just prior to this my car was averaging 19 to the gallon! With carefull use too. I knew it wouldn't be cheap to run but that can't be average surely ?

18 19 easily done round town, but maybe check your vac system and multi rams as well, but obviously fuel/injector problem will not help . Be carefull with this fault. I have heard of vectras destroying cylinders by washing the oil off the bore with excess petrol. Owe!

I would take a look at the spark plugs after a quick run to see if one is wet. It could be an injector stuck open, the wiring shorted to hold it open, or possibly a bad output driver on the ECU.

I'VE ONLY BLOODY FIXED IT !!! with thanks to the guys on this site. But Kevin gets the gold star as it was a short on the main injector loom.

Some muppet in the past has worked on it and pushed the injector loom between the top of the bulkhead and the windscreen wiper linkage  >:( >:( so over time it has steadily worn through and shorted four of the wires ( I even took a piccy)

So after some quite daring (for me) spanner work I found the fault and phoned my best mate Jay who is an auto electrician and he then repaired the wires and we got it put back together before dark  :y It runs great, the warning light has gone out , and it has been slowly burning/ evaporating all that fuel that was in the exhaust with a lovely smell.

Thanks again to all who replied. Credit to a great site ! :y

Dont want to rain on the parade but would anybody expect future cat problems with that amount of fuel down the pipes? Worth some cataclean?

Cats might be ok, see how you go.

I would definately change the oil though, the amount of neat fuel that will have been washed down the bores is likely to have thinned it out a lot!

I will if I have to, but I anoly did the oil, filter and crank sensor the day before :-[ and it just seems a shame to throw away all that lovely fresh golden oil.  :'(

I would take M DTM's advice.  Vx oil is dirt cheap on TC, so worth doing :)

I think you need to worry about the state of the cat on whatever side the injector problem was, and it's probably too late for Cataclean to do any good.  Get an emissions test done months before your next MoT - if the cat has failed at least you'll have plenty of time to look for a cheap replacement; finding the problem on MoT day really limits your options.
