Head Gasket...or what?
« on: 23 August 2008, 22:17:04 »

Ok, just got a new 97 R elite...its in generally very good condition...seems to be a leak from the back of the engine though and the water just runs straight out...or at least so I'm toldby the previous owner, not had a chance to test this or see where its coming from yet though...

RAC man apparently said its head gasket but I doubt it personally...

Now I have had a look at a couple of things, oil on dipstick is black not mayo...gonna take off plenum when I get a chance and see what I can see down the back of the engine...after filling header tank and see where its leaking from...but has anyone got any 1st thoughts on what might be wrong with it? I'm hoping its just a burst pipe which is pretty easily replaceable as the car is taxed MOT'd and very nice looking all round :)

More than likely going to be hbv.  Pain to get to but not to expensive.

Guy says that the water just runs straight back out when you put it in the header tank even with engine off...would have thought that with head gasket it would only come out with engine on and fluid under pressure?

Agreed  it sounds like a split pipe  core plug or the hbv. Depends on how fast the water comes out.  When my hbv went it was a small trickle with the engine off but a jet when it was pressurised.

HBV. ask the members presant at the second reading meet. all cars parked up  all nice tidy and then there crawling out from under my car is a nice big puddle of coolant. ignition off. been stood for ten mins. looked under and it was pessing out, like a tap running. see if its wet. if not your into the v, coolant bridge, oil cooler cover plate, stat housing, then maybe metal coolant transfer pipe at the back of the block above the bell housing. if you really un luky it my be core plug on back of cylinder head. But i will have a pound on hbv :y

The best thing you could do is to buy a new Heater Bypass Valve and fit it. The leak is almost 99.99% from that beastly thing! If it is not it is probably one of the hoses that go to it (3). You can get the HBV from The Vauuxhall Parts Warehouse on Ebay for £17.00 or so inc delivery.
Good luck, this resolved the same problem with mine.

With the cost of AntiFreeze being what it is do not put it in until you are certain that you have cured the problem! Any quality antifreeze will be ok as long as it is recommended for alloy lumps. I use Halfors Pro.

I had a steady trickle from back of engine - dripping down from the gearbox - was rear coolant transfer pipe, the seal was well, not sealing any more!  was flat as a pancake.

new one was a couple of quid, though a bit fiddly to fit.
