water pump
« on: 12 August 2008, 15:07:58 »

Having hi-jacked the petrol fumes in the coolant I'm starting my own thread. ;)
Having looked at the new V6 water pump in the box I can see that it's sealed to the front of the block with just an 'O'ring.
Q. Do I trust just the 'O' ring or do I use a smidgen of silicon type flange sealant too?
I'd obviously erased from my memory what a PITA it is to get to the front of the block, from when I did the cam belt.  :-?

Did mine a whiole ago, from the front as you say and have not had any leaks from there. All I used, same as markey, was a smear of grease to hold it in place until I bolted it together.
best of luck, hope you have no skin loss! ;)

Only time I've seen that o ring fail (if fitted properly) is after an oil cooler failure (and the oil softens the rubber...

Just grease then! I don't get back home till about 10:45 tonight but in my wisdom, although booked my car in at Drury Ln Oldahm for 9:00 in the morning for a geometry check/adjustment, I stripped my car down this morning. Looks like I'll be busy tonight re-building the bugger so I can use it tomorrow morning.  :-?  :-/  :-/

Hopefully on topic but...if the pumps leaking because of the seal would changing the seal be sufficient or is a new water pump recommended?

Need a hand?

A very generous offer John, but it's OK thanks. I'll don my miner's head lamp & get on with it as soon as I get home - it only took an hour or so to get all the sh1te from between the rad & block to the floor of my garage so hopefully shouldn't be much different going back on ....... he says optimistically.  :-?  :y :y
