V6 Cam Cover Replacement Seals
« on: 05 September 2008, 20:53:03 »

As some of you will have read I have been trying to purchase the parts required to do my first (and hopefully last) cam cover gasket renewal.

My confusion stems from the way Vauxhall package these parts and the moron at the parts counter at the Vauxhall dealer who seems to know even less about these cars than I do.

I seem to have everything listed in the maintenance guide but....

The guide says 90501653 3 off. This is where the Vauxhall guy made things complicated. They were listed at a price of £10.05 + VAT but it appeared that this price was for a pack which appeared to contain several seals so instead or ordering three packs I ordered just one.

(e.g. 90501652 comes in a pack of two, 9118135 comes in a pack of six)

Now, when I get home I find I have only one seal (it's red, two rings connected) loose i.e.not in a pack. (I know I should have checked this while I was there) so obviously I need two more.

£11.81 for a single rubber seal seems a lot to me. Does anyone know if this is right? Are they £10.05+ VAT each or was that the price for a set of three? (Why would you ever need only one of these surely you would always replace all three?)

I know I will need two more but I know they are going to want another £23.62 and I want to know if that is right.

Thanks for any help

All you really need are the camcover gaskets and o rings, and the black goo.

The air inlet seals can be re-used 99.9999% of the time ;)

When I had to replace the oil cooler I bought all the additional seals such as fuel rail to flange and plenum to fuel rail.

Whilst they may not 'need' doing, they dont cost much and at least they are in a known good state!!

Agree, never heard of anyone having to replace the 3 Plenum to inlet bridge seals and the inlet bridge to head seals.

It's worth getting a breather bridge to plenum seal 90467543 (looks like a top hat with two cut outs) as they tend to fall apart if the breathers haven't been removed for a while.

Just trying to follow the maintenance guide. It lists the part.

Does anyone know what they should cost?

If I've already paid for a set of three I'll go back and get the other two. If they are an extra £11 each , and as it seems I don't need them, I won't bother.

Thing is you don't have to take the lower black plastic divider off to do the camcovers so those two seals (90501652) don't get disturbed.

The three seals (90501653) are what the inlet trumpets seal to the plastic divider and are highly unlikely to be damaged, but you do have to take the inlet off to remove the cam covers.

  Hi Alex,
When i bought mine 90501653 came in a pack of 3 for about £10 + VAT.

The only other seals you don't mention are the 16 for the camcover bolts which don't cost much and IMO need doing as they go flat and hard. Held them on with a bit of the black sealent in the slot.

  Hope this helps,
                        Pete.

Hi,
Yup, the red "pair of glasses" looking seals are about £11.00 each.
Can't find my folder of receipts at moment, but I remember about that when I did mine.
In fact when I got all the gubbins for mine, when he said how much, I thought parts man had mistakenly ordered me a new engine!!!

As said, unless you are unfortunate, only seals you really need are the cam covers seals and the "O" rings for the cover holding bolts.
I also like to replace all the "O" rings on the pipe stubs of the breather tube unit.
What I do also think it is good to have are the green "O" ring seals for the throttle body to plenum seals, I have read of several instances of people stripping the threads in the plenum trying to seal the throttle body. With new seals you know you only have to nip the bolts up.

HTH

Well, we seem to have a direct contradiction here.

Pete Elite got 3 x 90501653's for a tenner, but Big Roger paid £11 each. I paid £11 for one thinking I was getting three in a bag.

Dazzler paid £45 for 2 X 90501652 but I just paid £11.90 + VAT for a bag which I have just discovered only contains one "triple" seal.

Looks like Vauxhall dealers charge what they bloody well like.

And to cap it all the general advice seems to be that you don't need them anyway.

(P.s. I do have the 16 camcover bolt seals, black, round and about the size of a 5p piece)

I would bet that the price should be for a bag of three for the tenner plus VAT and the dealer is simply trying it on.  As to whats needed or not, as per the guide HERE then in the first couple of lines, M_DTM says: On all the ones I have changed so far (and I have doen a fair few!), I havn't needed to change the inlet gaskets....but, the numbers are there for completeness .

Hope that clears things a tad....   :y

The how to states they are for completeness....

Imagine pulling the whole thing apart to find out they are breaked!?! Replace them the first time you are doing it if you are going to keep the car, only way to get them into a known state!!

Yes, many price differences between stealers...

I'll bite the bullet and pay what the "stealers" demand. I intend to keep the car for some time so I might as well do thorough job.
