Autobox fault
« on: 12 September 2008, 23:01:17 »

Had autobox fault on display this week. Time for a fluid change this weekend but!!!! Driving back to Bristol this afternoon fault displayed again and box entered "limp mode". Pulled over after a couple of miles. Tried to restart car nothing. Indicator light showing "R" when pushing lever thru all positions. Lifted lever gaiter, put lever into "N" position and had to physically push down the ignition key release contact switch so engine would turn over. It appears that the lever when in "P" or "N" isn`t coming into contact with said switch. Anyway, got her going again but although "D" is selected and gears are changing as they should indicator light shows "N". If I move from "D" down to 3, 2, or even 1 (obviously slowing down to compensate) the box does not change down and at all times the only indicator light showing is against the "N". I also noticed that when I stopped b and engaged "P" (with engine running) the reversing lights are on. If I switch engine off, I have to leave the selector lever in the position that the indicator light shows as "N" (but in reality it has engaged "D") otherwise I have to use the same procedure again to start it i.e. remove lever surround and push down on contact switch. I`m thinking maybe it`s the selector linkage slipped or possibly the selector lever needs adjusting. Any and all thoughts on this issue greatly appreciated :-/ :-/ :-/

Sounds like the selector switch is primary suspect - on the side of the box where the lever attaches to.  They can get full of oil and fail...

That`s what I initially suspected Phil but I can`t figure out why, when "P" or "N" is selected the lever isn`t making contact with the ignition release switch. Like I said, I have to remove the gaiter and physically hold the thing down. >:(

Been under the mig, linkage adjustmet is OK. Seems like it`s gonna be a new selector switch. Ay idea of the cost. :-[

One nut where the selector shaft joins to the box and two bolts then off it comes.

Easy to open as its screwed together!

Do not use WD40 to clean it
Go to Maplins & get a can of switch cleaner to clean the electrical contacts

Right, switch out and cleaned (full of crap) These are the symptons;
In "P" "R" is lit, car won`t start.
In "R" "R" is lit and reverse engaged
In "N" "R" is lit and neutral engaged
In "D" "R" is lit and auto drive engaged
In "3" "N" is lit car will start but brake on `cause gear is engaged
In "2" "D" is lit gear engaged
In "1" "3" is lit gear engaged.
Car will only start in "3" with "N" lit
Any suggestions :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

Ok, if you look at the last pic I posted above, you will see that I have placed an allen key in an indent on the swith......slacken off the two bolts securing the switch to the box and rotate the switch asembly (it has some adjustment) until you can do the same.
