Had my 2001 MV6 for two weeks now and really pleased with it.The only problem ive had is the brakes dont stop the car too good and the pedel is soft and seems to have a lot of travel in it.No brake fluid leaks that i can see any where.No slave cylinder leaks.Car has done 46000 clicks.Any idears?

Brakes on my MV6 tended to be on the soft side as well, untill they got some short sharp heavy use then they worked a rteat.  Worth a wee go, in case its simply the pads that have glazed over.  

Otherwise, do a brake fluid change, taking care to get the really old stuff out the calipers by use of a hoseclamp and the bleed screw, not simply pushing the old fluid back up the system...   :y

Yes it had sat for a while when i bought it.It took a couple of days for the rust to go on discs. Had same prob on a car and it was master cylinder?I will give it a fluid change and hope that cures it.

Clamp the flexible brake hose as close to the caliper as you can then open the bleed nipple and push back the pads/ pistons, this emptys out the brake fluid from the calipers :y
Note: nipple sounds sexier than bleed screw  ::)

Then open the bleed screw, push the calipers/pads back with carefull use of a screwdriver or similar and expell the old crappy fluid.  Close the nipple, open the clamp and depress the brakes acouple of times to reseat the pads.  Repeat process at least once to ensure nice clean fluid is now in place....   :y

Brake fluid hygroscopic which means that it attracts water.  Water boils (such as extreme brakinmg), creating steam.  Steam is compressible, thus giving a spongey brake pedal.  Thats why a fluid change is recommended every couple of years....   :y

brake fluid is hygroscopic ie it absorbs water from the atmosphere.  Water in the  sytem is likely to boil off under hard/severe braking therefore giving you the same effect as air in the sytem ie soggy brakes. Suggested change interval for brake fluid is 2 years
