Rear subframe bushes
« on: 12 September 2008, 22:50:15 »

I need to replace mine and i remember reading a while back (cant find with search) that there are two different types normal and heavy duty.

Does anyone have a part no for the heavy duty ones please as my local stealer only lists one and its probably not the ones i want.
TIA

dont know the numbers lee but i have always ment to ask about rear bushes, considering how fragile the front bushes are, it seems logical to me to check the rears as well,  is there any way of checking these and what are the symptoms? Cheers.

If you're talking about the huge rear sub-frame bush nearest the front of the car Vx only do the original part. No one really seems to list a heavy duty part in the UK but apparently some other parts will fit.

To check them jack the rear of the car and put an axle stand under the sub-frame (not only to support it but also to hold it in place). Undo the big nut (where I usually jack the car) and then the 3 others holding the plate on.

Now you can clearly see the bush and inspect it for cracking/tears etc.

It's a big soft bush with big air gaps and should have some play.

by "some play" i presume you mean movement controled by the rubber of the bush itself. Not free play caused by say, an ovalised hole for instantance?

Dont know what the symtoms normaly are but mine skips/jumps the backend out when going around corners with the occasional knock and theres a lot of movement in them.    As for checking im lucky enough to have the new mot ramp with pneumatic play detectors and it shakes the car quite a bit so you can see the movement easily. But tbh just looking at them was enough to make me think they were gone as you could see a clean area where the bush touches the chassis and this clean bit was about 12-15mm bigger than the bush so you could tell they were soft/split.

Oh and yes i am talking about the big bush at the front of the rear subframe.

Would you mind keeping us informed how you get on? I am interested in anything that will tighten up the basic handling. I dont want to wang round corners like lewis, just keeping  the thing in a straight line would be a start. I know about the usual front end issues but the back dont seem to get the same attention, maybe for good reason, maybe not. No harm in looking.

if it helps, Omega bushes have void holes in them and are rather soft,
GSI carlton and senator bushes are solid and rather stiffer :ywhich tighten up the rear end nicely :y
however stealers will now, if you ask for a senator bush sell you an Omega bush as they are a direct replacement :-X however you can
buy poly bushes for a carlton which fit the omega as i have done to mine!!!
hope that helps?? :y
