TEMP GAUGE AND TC LIGHTS STILL
« on: 22 September 2008, 18:10:37 »

I am still having problems with these two items .
The first thing that happens is the temp gauge suddenly decides to go from normal operating temp up in to the red very quickly this causes the high temp warning to come on followed by the TC light the car appears to run ok when this happens , althought the idle speed does seem to get a bit rough .
Stopping the car and restarting it sometimes cures the problem sometimes for days or just a few minutes .
It has also started to not want to restart when turned off and back on .
I did check the fault codes and it came up with 49 and no others besdes 12 and 31 which I know should be there.
I checked the out from the alternator and it was ok , but saying that on Saturday night coming home the headlights were really dim and I knew there was no output from the alternator then it must have got a jolt and the output came back on the lights came back up to full brightness .
Sunday the car started ok on the battery but after 15 miles with just the radio on and a quick stop the battery was dead .
Called out AA and found no output from battery he put a charged battery on and follwed me home . the car was ok .
The battery has been charged up off the car and seems ok and the temp gauge seems to be behaving . The alternator is putting out 13.50 V and holds it onload  .
I am thinking the alternator is on its way out its done 130000 miles .
I am just thinking if the alternator playing up could be causing the other problems any ideas anyone please

I have now put the original ccr600 back in to the car but the temp gauge problem is still there

Given the intermittent nature of the problem I don't think its the alternator .. as the battery would take over until it GRADUALLY lost power.

Your problems seem to be more immediate .. I would check all connections to the battery for looseness and/or heating up when used, do the 0v (earth) cables as well, check them all, both ends ... corrosion could be causing bad connections.

One of the funny things about corrosion is that the resistance changes as the localised temperature changes .. so things work well while the connection is cold, but fail as it heats up through high resistance.

I had really weird electrical problems with an MGB years back .. the engine/body earth had failed and it was earthing back through the accelerator cable !!! ... :)

I have cleaned up the connections on the battery today but ot had chance to drive very far to try it out .
Saying that though the problem can sometimes not occur for days and then just reapper . I did think something may be getting wet when it rained but the weather does not make any difference it can do it in the wet or dry

For what its worth, I'm not convinced the alternator is toast...

If its not raining tomorrow I will have a go at them . I can see one earth point just under the battery tray and another going down the side of the engine .
Any idea what would have caused code 49 to happen the most  I have seen from the alternator is 14.14 v since  I have been checking it  :y

Today I have cleaned up the connection from the battery negative to the body just under the battery tray .
I have also had all the relays out and cleaned them up, and also unplugged the three loom conectors and sprayed with wd40 type spray just in case  :-/ everything looked to be ok .
The battery has been on charge all morning so its fully charged .
Problem is work time came around a bit too quick :( so I had to stop playing for today and did not get chance to see if I had made any difference

I have now fitted the extra earth from the battery to the block as a temp see what happens  :-/ .
I did find out why the air con clutch was sounding a little noisey as pointed out at Newnet .
The P clip that supports the power steering pipe was not refitted it was sat at the bottom of the pipe rattling about .

So far so good with this extra earth fitted I think I may have got it sorted now , I may just take it off again and see if the problem comes back as I did do a few other things at the same time .
