You will not have a add-on heater with a 2.6  :-/

You may have aux pump (sounds like you have) which is controlled by climate panel.

What are symptoms?

The pump doesn't normally run except when using the residual heat in the engine after parking up. I removed mine when doing the LPG conversion and it made no difference.

I suspect you've got another problem such as a partially clogged heater matrix or heater bypass valve, and the pump is masking the symptoms by providing greater pressure.

First thing I would do is to reverse flush the heater matrix through with a hose pipe to the pipes on the bulkhead, checking that it flows freely and then flush the rest of the cooling system and fill with fresh coolant.

Correct. Try parking the car with a hot engine, switch off, then press the "auto" button on the climate panel and turn the temperature up. The climate should come on, and blow hot air. The pump should now be running. In normal curcumstances, there is no power there because the climate panel doesn't run it unless the engine is stopped.
