Handbrake
« on: 11 October 2008, 12:44:59 »

My handbrake lever pulls all the way up and still doesn't hold the car that well.

Is this likely to be a cable problem or shoes?

I have some new shoes on their way from James which I am going to fit anyway.

If it is cable related, what are my options? Can I tension it and, if so, how?

Thanks

Nathan

I knew there was a reason that Marks DTM did that excellent guide in Maintenence Guides section, just so everyone can ignore it ;)

lol you can cheat and adjust it on the auto adjuster which is behind the rear disc- it's a nice way of adjusting them independantly- worked for me

Do it as per the guide, there is no other way to properly do it.

Indeed, as I proved to myself today with all stripped down, reassembled and adjusted. :y :y

hi...mine did the same......the adjusters can be done at the wheels however its a short term fix if mine was anything to go by....the cable may be stretched .
I had the cables replaced ...if i remember they cost about £26 from autovaux in wakefield.
It cost about 20 quid to fit by my local mobile mechanic.

Did this job myself this afternoon.  Handbrake was hitting the armrest to get it to hold the car, so needed doing.

DId it as per the guide but I found that I didn't need to disturb the heatshields to access the handbrake cable adjuster bolt - a 13mm ratchet spanner was perfect and easy to reach with the shield bent down a few cms.

Getting those shoes springs back on again was a bit of a trial though, but the long-nosed pliers and spanner method overcame in the end!

I found that the inside pads on each side were pretty well seized, so it was worthwhile just to get these cleaned up, filed and re-greased. Made quite a difference back on the road.
