If its ATF (redish colour) then you need to replace the gearbox sump gaskets.  Quite an easy job and you may as well change the gearbox filter while you're at it.

Otherwise if it engine oil then it is something else possible cam cover gaskets.  Its all in the HOW TO section compiled by the experts on here.

double check the colour but I bet it is your atf fluid level that is causing problems.  How did they diagnose selector switch?  What were the symptomns except for the warning message?

On the selector shaft is a oil seal. When the garage fitted the replacement switch they could have damaged it. :(

the oil seal on the selector shaft is on the inside of where the switch goes, unless they prised it off with a screwdriver [nasty!] have a good look at where the leak is coming from, as GAFFER says it could be the sump but i would definately check the inspection hole on the bellhousing, if its really wet & the small sump is soaked then it would be the converter/bellhousing oil seal, £8-42 inc p&p from JPAT [or they were when i got mine 3 weeks ago] from vx nearer £30-00.

Other candidate for ATF leakage is the fluid cooler pipes that connect from the gearbox to the chassis. Either way, sounds like the level needs to be topped up (with car level and engine running) and a good check for leakage to be made while you're under there.
