Do I need a new blank key?
« on: 09 October 2008, 21:11:20 »

Hi, my naughty car has just decided to  be very akward about turning the ignition key.  When I take it out the barrel pops out a little bit, I never looked before when before it started playing up so don't know if its supposed to do that.  When I put the key in, it has to be carefully and gently jiggled before it will turn.  Obviously I dont want to get stuck and do not want to have to leave the key in the ignition.  It will turn on and off if you dont let the key return to the "you can now remove the key" position.  I only have one key so can't even leave the key in and lock it.   Is the barrel gone or willa new key stand a chance?  Any ideas?  :-/

This is usually caused by a build-up of dust and grot in the barrel which causes one or more of the tumblers to stick.
You can remove the barrel and strip it down carefully then wash all the bits and reassemble with a hint of grease - no more or it will stick again soon.

Thanks for the advice.  After a squirt of carb cleaner, a gentle jiggle and  later a squirt of wd... Problem solved, or dissolved!  Thanks again, car back in my good books. :y  :y  ;D
