Just done a 1,000 4 day trip to Holland, just 10 miles from home on my way back, i think a spark plug went.

Came off the M40 after a long stint at 90mph with the cruise on (was fine on the motorway pulling up hills fine)

Stopped at the lights, idle was very rough vibration through the seat and gear stick, pulling away, sounded like running on 3 pots, really low down on power.

Stopped, got out, first thing i noticed was the exhaust note, was "put,put,put" rather than the smooth sound it usually is.

Limped home, spanner light came on and off during the 10 mile run back.

Left it for 10 mins at home, started it again, and ran smooth  :-/

Getting a tech2 plug-in tonight, and going to change the sparks (current ones are 30k old   )

Just hope its that rather than the coil pack!

Checked coolant level, not dropped.

Anti-freeze changed about 1 month ago, was changed summer last year before that.

Hi,
This sounds very reminicent of the problem I had. Could potter about around home area no trouble. But long run to Nottingham, would have trouble with missfire when into traffic. After 4 hrs set off home, no problems until back to Southampton when would missfire in the traffic.

Found to be the coil pack for one of the banks of cylinders breaking down.
Replaced coil pack and no more problems.

Brace for impact..... whats the cost of a 2.2 coil pack? Can they be got on TC?

Actually, i have noticed a "ticking" sound is more noticable on idle recently, sounds similar to the injector noise from Senators. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

               After your long stint on the M/way was it low on fuel, as i'm thinking maybe fuel filter or partial blockage in an injector:question.

Do any pictures exist, and if I want to replace my full set of leads (on the 2.5 V6), or perhaps just one lead, how easy is it to do? :-?

Once more, I am afraid that I am in the dark on this as I am still used to dealing with distributors!!

Had similar event with my 2.0lt also heard a ticking sound when I inspected with engine running the DIS pack was actually arcing to the engine, when I removed the DIS pack and inspected it there was a crack from the front to the back on number 4.
changed DIS pack (29.99 & P+P on FLEABAY) purring like a kitten again. Hope this helps.

Take the spark plug cover off, open the bonnet and watch for any fireworks in the engine bay.  Do this at night obviously!

Thanks for the replies guys, to answer some questions...

1) Fuel - Had about 1/4 of a tank, so plenty of fuel

2) EGR Valve - Think i am right in thinking (first time for everything!) The 2.2 does not have an EGR?

I am off to the stealers very shortly to get some spark plugs.

It did it again comming back from work last night, started up pull away, running on 3, spanner light on.

Switched off, restarted, was fine for the rest of the 20 min run
