Can anyone whoose had there TD chipped tell me if the computer read out particularly the consumption figures are still accurate.
In other words am I still to believe the figures now showing is what they reflect the fuel the car is using.

The reason is I am getting 37 mpg towing a 1460kg caravan,  before the chip it was somewhere around the 26-28 mark if I was lucky.

And those figures are towing around the Peak District, who knows what it's going to achieve on mainly flat motorway driving.

Given that they are derived from the pump duration then they should still be pretty accurate.

Hi Mick,

I checked my actual consumption against the MID consumption before my chip and it was accurate within 5% or so. I have done the same tests after fitting the chip and its pretty much the same accuracy.

My MID average before was 33.4mpg (over 5k) whereas it is currently 50.1mpg (after 2.5k) - it is quite a noticeable difference.

Only problem I have found is passing the smoke test in the MOT

platty, is that due to the chip that its smoking? mine seems o,k but as im in the front i dont see it anyway

Mine was wildly different, but Omegatoy and I found a leak .  Not convinced we have found the entire problem though.

It should be accurate, seeing as its a signal from engine ecu based on how much fuel its pumping in.


As to smoke and MOTs, I normally put 2 tanks of proper (BP/Shell) in mine before MOT, as mine does start to smoke after a few tanks of supermarket stuff, and passed fine....

Well that's more or less answered my query.
Some numpty on another forum is trying to tell me that my computer must wrong in that it's no longer giving me the correct read out, in other words they say it's probably pumping more fuel through than it's telling the computer/ECU.

Oh and thanks for your input "Platty" as well.
Regarding the smoke test on MOT, I have since owning the TD double dosed with RedX diesel treatment and give it a good blast down the A38 before taking it there, has passed twice doing that.
Not had an MOT yet with the chip fitted yet but will do the same when due.

mine has been chipped for 3 years now but i only run it on super diesel never had a problem with the smoke test yet

Unless you up grade your gear box to the AR35 mate from a 3.0 petrol Omega you don't want one...

A chiped TD with a AR25 Auto box will eat it's self very quickly

I run mine on cheap crap all the time cos i'm tight - that is the only reason it smokes 40 a day. It smokes enough to leave a black streak on the road if I launch it off the lights  

At the MOT I just took it straight in not thinking about the smoke - the limit was 3 and mine scored 4.5   (not sure of units)

But as people have said, give it some diesel magic and good quality fuel and you should be OK.

platty, perhaps youd better leave the pink stuff alone , as for chipping its easy enough to fit but as jonargraig says youve got to change to an ar35 box, using your original t/c & bellhousing, straight forward enough but flamin` heavy work

I wouldn't dare use that stuff - would be a proper smoke screen!

I think that she is due a couple of tanks of nicer stuff considering she passed the MOT easy enough.

Yep I can leave a smoke screen alright but non worst than other more modern diesels I followed cars/vans.
Will also try better diesel at MOT time as I usually run on Sainsburys or Asda stuff. Tried that more expensive Total diesel once, and the TD ran crap on it, well it seemed like it anyway.

very awkward to know what diesel you are actually getting, my mum used to work at the buncefield terminal [the one in hemel that went "pop"!] & alot of these companies get their diesel from the same tanks, anyway platty if you want to REALLY spoil your tractor go mad & get an AR35 box & chip it, the difference is amazing to say the least, if you fit it yourself itll be an outlay of about £150 for 2nd hand box & chip, & another tenner for clean pants
