Oil leak update
« on: 22 October 2008, 15:42:30 »

Still getting 6/7 drops off the two down-pointing bolts at the front of the TC when parked overnight ... definately Engine oil .. by taste smell and look !!!

Today have stripped the top end back, checked plug wells, ... bone dry, ran some kitchen towel around as much of the cam cover edges as I could reach .. all dry.

Cleaned the breathers, which were not particularly mucky, but could not remove the small pipe from the breather vent box .. it would not move and would have split if I pulled any harder !! .. was able to suck and blow through the pipe reasonably easily though, so I reckon that small hole is clear.

Had a damned good look all around .. no sign of any leakage at the top at all. In the 3 hours I've worked on it, 3 drops have fallen from those bolts.

I guess I'm going to have to book this in to my local garage so we can get it up in the air to try and see where the leak is from, as lying under is proving a tad difficult ..... to me I'm wondering rear crank seal as I can't see any "runs" from anywhere, and thats all I can think is behind those two bolts .. engine oil wise anyway

I also removed the powersounder whislt I had the scuttle off... expected a load of noise when I disconnected ... all I got was 3 very feeble sqawks .. so I guess its well fubarred.

ah well ... we continue to fret ..  :(

Edit ::

Love it ... TIS on Rear Crankshaft seal ....

Quote
Remove drive disc or flywheel – see operation "Drive Disc, Remove and Install" or "Flywheel, Remove and Install". Lever seal ring (1) out with suitable tool.

Caution

Do not damage sealing surfaces.

  Clean

Clean sealing surfaces and remove gasket remnants.

  Install

Lightly coat sealing lip of seal ring with silicone grease (white) and press over Protective Ring KM-635-1. Drive seal ring into cylinder block with KM-635-2 (2) and KM-535 (3). Install drive disc or flywheel – see operation "Drive Disc, Remove and Install" or "Flywheel, Remove and Install".

makes it sound so easy ...   :(

I must admit, it looked like it was spreading from the bottom of the bellhousing when you posted the pictures, so my money is on the crank rear oil seal as well. :'(

Be worth having a poke around just in case it's something else but I fear the worst.

Of course... TIS have omitted one small step in the process - removal of gearbox and torque converter. ::)

Well I looked in, and felt around, through the 2 rubber bungs and found nothing ... but where else can it be from with no sign of "creep" or "flow" ...

I'm going to try and get it high enough to walk under ... before I pay someone to drop the gearbox, I don't have the facilities or back strength to DIY at that level......

I wonder if James does does low level gearbox-drops .........

Sorry if I have missed some of this post but are any of the oil levels low??? I ask because while changing the engine oil a few weeks ago I also saw oil on the two lower bolt heads. Yesterday with the car a ramp did a number of fluid level checks, the diff took a egg cup of 'hypoid 90' and the auto box was full ie running out (with the engine running), so I am also lost as the where the oil on the bolts is coming from !!!

The amount of oil I appear to be losing .. 5/6 drops overnight, unknown whilst driving, but looking at the "wetness" its not a lot more ... is not showing on the dipstick as far as a major leak anyway ... level is down about 1/8-1/4 " from the last oil change 2700 miles ago .. but the leak has only been around a week-10 days  at the most.

I have the same leak, Nige. Engine oil, that I cannot pinpoint.

Did you take the black inlet bridge out, and check the top oil cooler unions?

More than happy to drop a box on stands - but I'd need some help to get it back up there ;D

Well, if it was the crank seal then the back of teh flex plate would be pretty caked in it.

I would pop the plenum off and inlet out and check the oil cooler unions.

Dang ... had the plenum off to today .. but not the inlet  :(  and it looks a darned sight more intricate to take off now all the LPG gubbins is there, enough of those bits to undo to get the plenum off !!!

I've got the chance of putting it on a 4 post lift next tuesday.. might wait 'til then and have a damned good look around with a high powered light.

If its oil cooler connections there would have to be some flow marks down the back of the engine ???

No way it can get "into" the TC/flexplate area except the crankseal is there ??

A reasonable assumption.....but as you say, the internals of the bellhousing seem fine

Thats with me lying on my back whilst the car is on an axle stand, trying to peer through a hole, or swab a bit of kitchen roll in said hole... it is highly possible that I've missed something .. :(

And what is there to move in there in an auto ?? if its a small leak, maybe even only a static leak .. would it show under such circumstances ??

I think up on a lift with a high powerd light and maybe even a mirror to look inside the TC might be worthwhile ??

For what its worth, its what i would do. From the pics its difficult to see how the oil can come from anywhere but inside the housing. As you say, no signs of it running down from anywhere. Iirc it looks like its coming through the middle of the round seal/bung as well as round the outside edge. If def. engine oil what else could it be but crank seal, there is no way the oil could run down "into" the bell housing from elsewhere/outside... is there???
