mig 2.5 manual box.

Can anyone tell me if poor gear selection when cold is common on migs. Car done 100k and having difficulty selecting all gears incl reverse (tight to go in). Once in gear changes no bother. no crunching, clutch is fine. just feels like selector problem. Has this selector mechanism any adjustment?

I had the same problem. Replaced the clutch - no massive improvement (although it did help, and was an easy job. Guide on here).

Changing the box oil was a significant help (It really is worth doing, if you use the right oil from VX - you will notice an improvement, and it's an easy job.)

Also bleed the clutch system, using an easibleed attached to the gearbox nipple, forcing fluid back to the tank.

In a nutshell, I would, in this order

1) Bleed hydraulic cluch system
2) replace gearbox oil
3) check out the clutch...

Any slip or drag, or judder on pulling away?

clutch feels fine, no shudders, no crunching gears. just difficult selecting the gears as if missing the gate. Is there a drain plug to empty box so I can change oil ?

Yep drain plug and refill plug. Peice of cake, IIRC it takes in the region of 1.6 litres, but do double check :)

Wow not like the auto box then that doesnt have a drain plug and takes 8.4 litres! :D But same thing, bleed and change fluid, presumably still Dextron 3 atf for the box...local dealer here says its £5 a litre including vat but make sure you get them to give you Dextron III or equivalent and not Dex II

wow, first post ive seen about a manual box. Does the clutch pedal bite a bit close to the floor, i know you said its fine but these things can wear gradually and you dont notice. If clutch has adjustment(dont know i have an auto) maybe adjust it so the pedal bites further from the floor, there by opening the clutch further, and making changes easier? Just a thought. More likely to be as Maria/James says as sounds like first hand experience. Worth a mention maybe?

It is NOT Dex 3!!!

Get genuine....1.2 litres required and its pretty cheap.

Also, put the box in gear and foot on the clutch when you start the car......

The manual boxes aren't the slickest, as said above 1.2 litres of genuine Vx synthetic oil is your best bet + a reverse clutch bleed.

Hi Guys,
Just found the answer, just invested in a manual from Mr Haynes.
To qoute
"Adjustment to the [size=12]Gearchange linkage [/size]not a routine operation and should only be needed if the mechanism has been removed. If the gearchange action is stiff or imprecise check that it is correctly adjusted".
Then it goes on to mention that Vauxhall service tool KM-631A will be required to carry out this procedure.
So there we are the same syptoms I am experiencing and the answer to my question. Which raises another question, Where the hell am I going to get tool KM-631a :-?

I think I would bleed the clutch and change oil first.
The oil is about £3-4 a litre and you need 2 bottles.

Those are routine jobs that will only do good anyway and hopefully may fix it.

I'd change the gearbox oil:  did it on mine and certainly improved things a lot.

You can adjust the mechanism without the tool - just using common sense. Undo the clamp, get an assitant to hold the gear stick in the correct spot, nip it up and check you can select all gears OK.

Tried adjusting it on mine - no improvement.

ok then, i just remember my dad had a 1.4 astra to carry the dog about in that he has and he had to put it in 2nd before 1st to get it to go in lmao!
