This weekend im going with my cousin to view a few Omegas. The one he's particularly interested in is a 2.5 TD CDX Manual which is great because he only needs it for a year which means this time next year (When im turning 17) I'l be able to have it off him The 2.5 V6 Petrol, well I can afford the insurance it's the petrol Im worried about and 170bhp + RWD with a 17 year old behind the wheel  [smiley=shocked.gif]

Anyway were going to see 3 cars all together. That 2.5 TD CDX, a 2.5 CDX Manual and a 2.5 Elite Auto. The last two being petrols.
Just asking really what do we need to look out for etc? There all Pre-face models. I come from a family of fords [smiley=embarassed.gif] and my cousin drives a 1.8 Escort GTi 5 door on throttle bodies with a very expensive paint job, lowered a bit on anthracite alloys. Thing is his job will be taking him to Bristol every day (We Live in Bridgend, near Cardiff, South Wales) and he dosent want it going on the motorway clocking up the milage every day so an Omega for a year until he can get a new Insignia will suit him down the the ground. Now Manual or Auto dosent matter to him as on the motorway it will just be in 5th. So what things should I look out for really? I know the TDS lump is from a BMW and is pretty much bullet proof with regular oil changed but thats about it really?

sorry to piss on your fire but there will be no chance in this world you will get insured on a v6/td omega on a policy in your own name ! i had to wait till i was 20 with 3 years ncb before i could get insured on a mv6

omegas hmm tyre wear make sure the front tyres havent worn down on the inside edges can be fubared wishbones or geometry.

cambelts every 40k must be done like all vauxhalls they do go snap!

crankshaft sensor wears out around 110k can be an excellent bargaining tool as its about £40 to fix

check the heated seats work aswell

Don't know about insurance, but all the V6 petrol and the diesels are good for loads of miles if they get regular servicing. Check that first.

They all go rusty. Tops and bottoms of the doors mainly.

Check throught the MOTs and service history to make sure mileage is real.

And listen to your gut. If it gives you a bad feeling - walk away.

You dad must be brave then to entrust his NCD with you! No way would I have done the same with my lad, 7 he's a few years older than you. He proved it within a few weeks of putting his own car on the road.

yeah if its in someone elses name it will be cheap my dad made me earn my own NCB so im a tad bitter!

omegas generally are reliable at the end of the day they were built to compete with BMW 5 Series and they certainly wiped the floor with the Scorpio!

rust is the prefacelift / mini f/ls problem try and get a 1998 + model as these got some extra toys

*cough cough* i got insured with my omega for 2700 so it's possible he can get insurance.. it's just wether he can actually afford it... 2.0 is the way to go... maybe 8v too if your only a yung'un as 16v to begin with was plenty for mi right foot haha!

Well we had a play about on the RAC website and my Dad's got a brand new Volvo V50 R-Design T5 in White on leese so he dosent use his NCB anyway plus with the RAC there protected, we got a quote of £1312 for the V6 and £980 for the TD On top of that I can't see me booting it everywhere really, I've been there and done it all in the car with my cousin when he first learned to drive 3 years ago.  I'l be taking it easy me thinks

Also does anyone know if you can run the TD lumps off Vegetable/Cooking oil? Thing is my Uncle (the Dad of the cousin buying an omega) runs a chippy. Could be handy if he could run it on the oil?

IIRCC the bosch pump doesn't like cooking oil. If that's what he wants to do he'd be better getting a Peugeot (sorry for swearing ) because these, apparently, run well on cooking oil
