funny engine problems

starts ok - went about 8 miles and stopped for around 25 mins

restarted and it started too quickley which caused to it limp up to idle

wasnt happy for some reason with the idle and then after 4 miles i got to a roundabout and it developed a misfire (twice) didnt happen again but then the next day after around 4  hours or the mrs using the car to go to the supermarket it didnt start for about  4-5 seconds cranking.

petrol was on 90 miles when it first started and when it wouldnt start it was on around 70

any ideas? fuel pump problem with low fuel?

My vote goes for the crank sensor. Cheap and easy enough to replace and eliminate it. Paperclip test would give you the codes to confirm this, instructions in the how-to -section...

it seems to be 12 ( looks like this is part of the test)

and 13 - o2 sensor open circuit

or it could have been 31 no engine rpm signal!

no other faults coming up

does round like crank sensor, would expect code 19(iirc?) though. It will usually throw other codes as well, only use genuine sensor. 12 means diagnostic start, ignore, same for 31 no cranks sensor signal if engine not running ignore may also get cam and maf codes as well, all caused by the crank sensor giving wrong signals. Except you dont have a crank sensor code. Run the test from 1-2. Through all the codes until you see 1 -2 again. It has then done a full cycle. And will repeat the hole lot again...iirc hth

Crank sensor fault matt ,classic symptoms, poor starting and intermittant non start. there are 2 types of sensor for the v6 part Nos for them are                          retail      normal trade   Trade club
2.5 early models=90492006  £77.00        £69.30            £57.75
      later models=90492061   £56.00       £50.41            £42.00

sounds like crank sensor to me, i had exactly the same symptoms , mine would start ok , drive one mile and then not start etc etc, there were no set routine it just started when it wanted to lol,
i did the paperclip test and it did not show any faults, but i changed the sensor anywayl and have not had a prob since

re the trade club card - do the dealers have to process the part a different way as my crank sensor just cost me £60 with the original price only being £57 before discount and vat.

anything i can do before it arrives?

all sorted tonight - got home from work and the dealer had sent the part out in the post. fitted it and started first time -

 got to the point with the old one where it would not even start and it went from intermit to not at all in the space of a few days
