Front disc replacement 2.5 facelift
« on: 26 October 2008, 20:27:34 »

Hello all - can I ask for some advice on when to change the front discs on a 2.5 facelift (Cd estate).
Is there a minimum thicknes spec I can measure - or is there a rule of thumb regarding the 'lip' around the edge of the disc ? I've also heard the term 'matched' replacement pads ?
I'm happy to go the genuine part route - do you know which diameter discs they are too as there seem to be 2 sizes on Autovaux site ?

Cheers
Ian.

all omegas take the same brake disc size, only very early 8v 2.0's had smaller discs.

Get geniune, brakes is one area not to penny pinch. Set of discs and pads from a dealer is around £80.

If they look worn I just replace them, they're cheap enough and not a bad job to do... :y

If you have access to a 'Trade Club Card'  ;)

Min thickness according to Mr Haynes is 26.5 mm (new28 mm)

Depends if you have access to a bottomless pit of cash. eg 2 MOTs ago the tester noted the the discs on SWMBO's Astra were both 'worn to min' It's since passed 2 MOTs with no further comment on the same discs.
The only thing to note about an unworn lip on an otherwise OK front discs is that it will trigger the low brake pads message earlier than it needs.

All Omegas take 296mm discs, except pre 1997 2.0l ones (286mm)

..sounds good to me - I've checked out the 'how to' pages and looks pretty straightforward as you say.
Cheers all - I'll put it on  my list of things to do next month.

Thanks
