Engine non start and error 15
« on: 24 October 2008, 16:54:09 »

First major let down by my Omega.  First trouble was error 15 on paper clip test which I did when engine warning light came on, which I believe is "Coolant temperature voltage high". This was intermittent ie engine warning light off and on. Thinking that maybe this was only a bad connection on the sensor, I kept going in the car as no immediate effects were noticed. Later however the revs on the car went up as I was driving and this is quite awkward in an automatic. Managed to stagger home and when in neutral the revs were up at 3000. At one stage the engine died and only just managed to start again. On leaving the car for the night, this morning it would not start and the battery was flat. Charged battery, engine will start but only run for a  second, then dies.  Battery is new this year and another paperclip test only shows error 31, 3 times and 15,  3 times. No other error codes.  Anyone tell me where to start to look other than a vauxhall agent.

Another question, do error codes get wiped when fault is cleared?  And where is the error 15 temperature sensor, its not that one at the back of the " V" is it?

Regards
Dave

It sounds very much to me like unmetered air is getting in if it's revving that high on it's own - check the security of all of the air intake, pipes, so on...

Also make sure the ICV is well seated and the connector attached.

Do you hear a major "Hiss" immediately while the engine stalls?

Idle control valve - located on front passenger side of plenum, sits in a rubber harness, has a connector on the back :y

Checked the various pipes, doesn't seem any leaks or tears. ICV connector seems ok. Engine will start now but runs straight away at 2500 or so, does hunt a little. At one stage fault seemed to go away when I waggled pipe to brake servo, but it came back and I can't see anything amiss around there and can't repeat the cure. Must have been coincidence.  Does the error 15 mean anything on this fault??
Any more ideas??

I don't think that waggling the servo pipe was a co-incidence - I think there is a major leak of unmetered air into the engine causing it to rev it's nuts off.

In the case you just described - check that the pipe from the servo is securely attached to where it joins the plenum, behind the ICV, passenger side...

Thanks everybody. I did have a good look at the servo pipe and its connector and nothing seems amiss I will check everything again tomorrow and have a good listen for leaks around all the inlet piping, its too dark now for a good look.

Just a thought. I once had a reving problem with my last 2.5 Omega, and it turned out to be an intermittent throttle potentiometer. What sort of resistance values should these read with a meter.

Potentiometer, i thought, only on drive by wire cars? Thinks yours is cable??? Someone confirm...

Potentiometer = TPS....

I'd have thought it still needs more air to cause this though - try clamping the pipe that goes into ICV and see if that reduces it a lot..

Had another look. Difficulty starting when it did start it ran OK. Poked around the brake servo again, no effect!  Wiggled around off side RAM pipe near the various sensors, suddenly fault appeared, 2500 RPM. Now can control the speed down by squeezing pipe going to ICV. Can bring the revs down to stalling almost???????

ICV problem??? or something else.

Help

maybe the fault is actually the multi ram actuator?
sending too much air through into plenium in general?

Now I've got to the stage of being able to control the revs down to stall by cutting off air to the Idle Control Valve;  doesn't this imply either the ICV or the signal controling the ICV is faulty. The crunch comes now. I am an  electronics (industrial electronics) man by trade. I can measure anything electrical and understand it, BUT! how does the ICV work, is it a purely analogue voltage drive, or is it pulsed, and what voltage waveform and level should I expect if I monitor its connections. If its an analogue valve, I should be able to apply a variable voltage to it and see if it opens and closes, if I knew the voltage range required. I could experiment but I don't want to "$%$^"  it completely if its ok.

The last question is does the error code 15 have anything to do with the fault or is this totally a seperate issue???
