Main belt idler snapped - opinions & parts pls
« on: 23 October 2008, 19:08:14 »

Oh dear, jumped in the car to drive home from work. Started up fine, drove up the road and changed into second. Then a funny grumbling noise and a rubbery twang - battery light comes but and engine still running ok.

Turn motor off and open bonnet... the short air con belt is sat up by the inlet manifold (intact) and the long drive belt is snapped and all twisted up in the viscous.  :(

Having a look through the slots in the front of the undertray there is a plastic idler wheel and a lump of ally laid there  :-/

Anyone have any ideas what has let go? Sound like main belt idler seized up?

Didn't have time to investigate much as it was dark and raining so just pushed it back to the car park and took the work motor.

Ah, hadn't thought about the main pulley - not too sure on the arrangement on the tractor. I tried to feel if it was the main tensioner but couldn't get my fat hands in there.

The pulley wheel at the bottom is plastic - but can't remember which pulleys are plastic on the tractor?

Well, had the front end apart today and assessed the destruction. I think the small idler for the Aircon belt has given up, throwing the Aircon belt into the main belt, this has then got tangled in the stupid viscous and pulled enough tension on the belt to snap the main belt idler in half  :o

The belt has then torn and got mangled up in the viscous further making a right old mess.

See pics...

Idler that has snapped...

...other half.

Original cause of probelms I think...

...used to be mounted on the metal pulley in the middle.

Carnage!!

This idler sounds a ruff as a badger chuff too...

Does anyone have the main idler on an old TD lump somewhere??

I'll look into getting the other bits from Andy C I think.
