erratic tickover on2ltr xev
« on: 01 November 2008, 18:51:18 »

at the moment im pulling my hair out, when started from cold car runs fine, when normal opperating temp is reached tickover becomes erratic racing up to 1500-2500rpm sometimes it behaves itself and sometimes it races and drives me mad. i have come to the conclusion that possibly the crank sensor is at fault, any suggestions pablo

I had the same with my old one. Pain in the arse when queing in traffic with an auto. It's the Idle Control Valve (ICV). It probably just needs cleaning.

Check out the good how-to in the Maintenane Guide section.

Might be the IACV is knackered (technical term) and may need replacing if cleaning with carb cleaner doesnt work...also clean out breather system...although its always possible you have an air leak somewhere...but as said IACV is by far your most likely culprit...

Had exactly the same problem with a 2.0 CD Cavalier, a friend had same problem with a Corsa it turned out to be chaffed wiring. Try following the wiring back and check its integrity. The problem statred with what appeared to be a slight missfire then all hell would break loose erratic revving of the engine, usually resulting in the engine stalling and an un-predictable journey length. Vauxhall could not find it either if its any consolation.

from experience eratic idle issues on most vxl motors normally points to a icv issue ...

i use wynns carb cleaner, fill the icv up and leave for about half an hour to dissolve all crud inside then when emptyed i flush with wd40 to relube the internals. 9/10 thatll work but if not a replacement icv is adviced ....

(only mentioning icv again as you said got worse after cleaning before )

Has the throttle cable been adjusted to cure stalling?

This can cause erratic idling, especially after the ICV, throttle body and breathers have been cleaned out properly.

Does the butterfly, in the throttle body operate correctly and freely?

A drop of (and I mean a drop) of 3 in 1 on the mechanism helps.

There's actually a modified ICV available from VX, I think it's the same part number but with an X on the end.

Any fault codes?

Could be a few things. ICV, faulty temp sensor, air leak....

another common problem is the narrow pipe coming off the camcover, it has a like a choke on it which is 1.6mm so you need to get some carb cleaner down that pipe too ;)
