After 65000 miles my "brake pad" light is finally on - I thought it was broken  

I bought fluid, pads and a new sensor 12m ago but have never got round to fitting them.  

If I decide to be lazy and get a garage to bleed the system and slip the new front's in at the same time, cos it's getting cold now  8-) will I need to change the rears too?

I know I can just look at the wear, but if the general rule is yes, then I'll pick up another set of Vx pads before I (or the nice man who want's to earn a few quid) takes the wheels off.

It's a 4 pot. It won't have gone fast enough to have worn the rears out!

mines on 115k, not touched the rear brakes yet  

New front discs and pads went on below 100k, still biting well. Although squeeking now, so need a little service.

Do it yourself, you know its done right, i bet they will just top up the brake fluid rather than flush and squeeze the old stuff from the calipers which is where the really bad fluid sits.

I would do it.  They cost not much more than a tenner for GM, and I have had two sets that started to fall apart rather than wear out.
Will give you an opportunity to clean out the caliper and throroughly replace fluid as well as Tunnie said.

I renewed the front discs and pads on my 2.2 auto at 60k.The rear discs and pads are original and show little sign of wear at 65k.

The rears tend to 'disintegrate' before they wear out. At 80k the pads, which were 1/4 worn, had come away from the back plate, so always checking the rear brakes.

Changed my rear pads at 70K  I presume these were the original set they were worn right down.

That was my experience too.   Given that they are a slightly important component and very cheap I would replace them.

OK. I asked for advise and most of you agree to do them all at once - for a tenner I think you're right.

Off to Vx again for me....
