Help with awful sounding engine
« on: 01 November 2008, 08:50:30 »

Hi, i was wondering if anybody could help. When starting my car this morning it started ok but the noise the engine is making is terrible. It sounds like a tractor a real tractor. The car itself seems to go ok and does not appear to have a loss in power not that i have given it too much hammer. The only thing is that earlier in the week i had the cam cover gaskets changed which until now had made huge improvements in the cars running.
I know its a bit difficult to explain a problem like this on here but any help would be appreciated

thanks
Steve

Just an update on this problem. The noise seems to be coming from the front of the engine where the cover for the timing belt is?? its creaking and squeeking like mad so i dont know if its be cam belt that is at fault or if something as broke within that area
I guess i should not be driving this in its current state??

cheers

You guess right! I wouldn't even run the engine until you can pull the cover off and check the belt! When was the cam belt last changed and did it have new tensioner and idler pulleys?

Try taking the tension off the auxillary drive belt ('fan belt' to most of us  ;)) or removing it for and see  if that makes a differnce. The bearing in the tension tends to dry out and squeal like a stuck pig. The tensioner is top left as you stand & look under the bonnet. Don't run your car for long without the fan belt though as it drives your water pump.

i have an idea when it was last changed service book says at 30,00 miles and its now on 68,000. As for the tensioner and pulleys i could not say. I have a new canbelt sat in my garage waiting to go on but its not something i could do myself. Guess i would have to bite the bullet and take it down to vauxhall.

cheers

first, as above, pop the aux belt off to see if that is causing the noise.

Second, when you say that you have a new cambelt waiting to go on i presume you mean with rollers and tensioners.  Belts rarely fail on their own and it could be that the noise you have is a tesioner letting go, when this happens the belt is off and goodbye engine.

Finally, don't bother with VX for fitting the belt, you CAN do it yourself.  get the DVD and a locking kit: it's easy

would a problem with either my fan belt or cam belt let me still drive the car( not that i plan to ) its just that the car feels ok its not rough feeling just rough sounding. On the way back to my house when the problem first came apparent the car still pulled ok and was as responsive as ever, and to be honest if i wouldn't have turned my stereo down i would not have even noticed :-[. If i do manage to remove my fan belt, is it easy enough to put back or is there certain timings with this i need to know about.

apologies for my ignorance

thanks

Do not drive it umtill you know what the noise is, if it is  cam belt related and belt comes off you will wreck the engine  :(

The aux belt is on a sprung loaded tensioner, use a long 15mm spanner or socket and bar move tensioner away from belt, remove belt, refiting is reversal of that, just remember which way the belt goes round the pulleys.

Also bear in mind the water pump is driven by cam belt so check that is ok
