If i do manage to remove my fan belt, is it easy enough to put back or is there certain timings with this i need to know about.

apologies for my ignorance

thanks
Steve

The 'fan belt'/auxillary drive belt is easy enough to remove while you just test the tensioner bearing. You need a 15mm spanner/socket & T-bar on the nut in the middle of the top left pulley and lever it to your right. This will allow the belt to come off the pulleys. It's a bit more involved if you're going to remove it, you've the crappy secondary air pipe work to mover at the bottom right corner. Just try to make a note/phone photo of the way the belt is routed, there's 8 ft of it and it's easy to forget how it fits. ::)

if the aux belt has been taken off previously and put on the wrong way round it will make a howling noise according to the dvd ;) lol

i'd say it was a bearing on one of the idlers/on the tensioner on the timing belt

Hi Mine was similar to your prob and it was tensioner pulley wheel ...my advice dont run it until you get the front covers off and check the timing belt tensioner and pulley wheel or it can be a costly job if the belt slips off.
I got mine done by a local mobile mechanic for about £200 and it was on my drive too which i could view being done.

I live near derby so try a local mobile man if you can find one.

cheers

Yes! That's your fan belt tensioner. You're moving the whole thing to the right via the 15mm nut in the middel of it.
Mmm? I can't thin of where that oil i coming from, apart from perhaps around the cams.
It might be an idea to slacken off as many of the cam cover bolts as you can and have a look inside. :-/

like andy says, if you undo the torx bolts on the actual belt cover then you can bend it slightly to have a nosey down to see if anythings in there

ok, so slackened off the tensioner, assuming i am right in thinking the fan belt was then not going round?? Car sounds worse than before so i have tightened this back up. Not in possesion of any torx sockets so unable to get cover off to look inside. sounds cream crackered to me.

thanks

ok  let's just be absolutely sure of things here.  When you say you slackened the tensioner off, what did you do?  pull it over to the right hand side, slip the belt off it and the remaining pulleys, start up and still get a terrible noise.  the point of slackening off is to take the aux belt off the pulleys so none of them are turning.  You can then elimiate anything aux belt driven.

This means it is something else: very likely cam belt related so DO NOT start or drive it any more until you can eliminate it.

You've also got me confused about the oil mark on the cambelt cover.  I can't think of anything that would cause that but you do have a leak of some kind there behind the aux tensioner and below it.  It is possible that the leak is causing the noise (say water getting in the alternator).  however, it is just a guess.  best thing to do is to identify/eliminate the cambelt first.

don't worry about using a torx set.  you should be able to get a normal socket to fit.  the bolts should not be very tight.  Give them a try.

Ok, checked this one tonight.....and the cambelt and cams are very noisey (possibly due to the cambelt being loose).

Checked the timing....and its not jumped any teeth so need to schedule in a cam belt change in the next few evenings.

Ok, belt and tensioners changed tonight, tensioner had siezed resulting in melted plastic and metal filings every where.

So....1.5  hours for the full belt and wate pump change and it fired up fine so all is good again!
