Died on me-won't start!
« on: 04 November 2008, 08:45:28 »

Driving home from work... my MV6 Auto just cut out on me after about 20 mins driving. It won't turn over, cam belt is ok. Rev counter not moving. Not even trying to fire. Plenty of fuel etc. AA took four hours to respond in which time I caught a taxi home. Winkers!!
Any thoughts... can I access fault codes or anything? Cheers SmiffyMan (Worthing)

Worth doing the Paperclip test mate to see if any fault codes have been stored.
Like said above is the car not turning over, or not firing?

I ask this question, which some may think is a stupid one from a woman, so should be ignored, BUT this is asked, as always, from experience.  ::) ::) ::)

My 1996 3.0 Elite would not turn over, let alone fire, but all the lights were fine as there was no problem with the battery.

This was a an important clue to the problem, which to start with fooled the recovery AA engineer, which was the a/c compressor had failed and was stopping the engine from being turned over! ::) ::) ::) ;)

Just a thought that's all! ::) ::) ::) ;)

Sorry.. not clear.. my stupid early morning Brain!!. The engine turns over fine, plenty of battery life etc. It seems that there is no spark.. the engine has compression so cam belt ok. Absolutely no signs that indicate to me what the problem is. I have had oil leakinging onto manifold recently - drivers side, usual problem, but wonder if the electrics have been affected somehow? Any suggestions will all be greatfully accepted.
Cheers

Ah that's clearer thanks! :D :D ;)

Given that you are losing oil, is there any oil in the plug wells? :-?

More than likely your crank Sensor mate like already said, if you do the Paperclip test/ Pedal test you will confirm it with the fault reading :y

Thanks for feedback - I have just been to the car and guess what - started first time. I am reluctant to drive if far though (You dont'say!!  :-?)

Because of the oil leak from the rear of the drivers side rocker housing, I know it is possible for the chambers to be filled with oil (I'll check those tomorrow and get sucking on a piece of tube) - is there any electrics that may be affected by this - I would hate to think of a loom or something getting roasted in hot engine oil - any thoughts. I have'nt done the paper clip test yet but may give it go tomorrow.

Cheers all

Typical symptoms of crank sensor on way out - replace asap or it will let go & you will be stuck!!

Typical crank sensor symptoms. Oil in plug wells will cook your plugs and leads and possibly over load the dis pac. Expect miss fires when oil removed/cam covers fixed. Clean the breathers when you do the cam cover gaskits or your wasting your time. But you know that..?

OK... I'ts done it again. Won't start. Broke my back pushing it up the road! So if I get a Crank sensor- how much am I looking at from my friendly local Vauxhall dealer and... what sort of time are we looking at to do the job. I'm pretty handy with a Stanley Hammer and a B&Q set of Fathers-Day-Present screwdivers complete with plastic wall hanger. Seriously- any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

Crank sensor is a very quick job, just one bolt, hardest part is locating it, easier if you jack the front end up.
