Oil Lack - 2.5TD CDX Auto
« on: 10 November 2008, 11:13:51 »

Hi,
got the recently aquired car through MOT ok. Hex head on oil filter was sheared off so got new VX part. At weekend went to do service but realised before I started that the cap was too small. Now in hand awaiting replacement part to do oil change.
So had a steady 80 mile visit yesterday. When going round a roundabout close to arriving home, the 'OIL LACK' warning was displayed for a while then went out. It reappeared just before arriving home. After a while checked oil level which is OK.

Not using it until I've got the new oil filter cap and oil changed so old oil may be the issue. Has anyone out there any experience of this display? Could it be that some other issue, other than old oil, like a dodgy oil pump etc. could be the root issue?

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,

Its funny that Vx supplied you the wrong one - they did exactly the same to me about 2 years ago!! At least the right one is cheaper!   ;D

Mine has popped up a couple of times saying "Oil Lack" but like yourself I have checked the level and its fine. I ignore it now as it seems to come on randomly about 5 times a year, usually after a oil change.

As long as your level is good and the pressure light doesn't come on I don't think there is much to worry about.

Anyone else experienced this?

The oil lack warning used to come up on my MV6 when level was about mid stick, generally when on an extended motorway run.  Solved by adding oil to the upper, max, mark and problem solved.

Thanks for that.
Yes checked level again this morning and it's OK. Definately requires changing though.
As far as warning lights go, I've always been led to believe that the warning light will go out at 10 - 15psi which ain't very much for oil pressure. I remember a meter on some vehicle I had showed 40 -60 psi normal running.
I know if I park my Xantia on a steep car park, the low oil light flashes until I'm on less incline.
As you say, yours does show occassionally, I'll see how it goes after oil change.

Thanks

I've  had the Check Oil Level come up loads of times and the level is perfect.. Its always happened when I've been driving normally too :)

Kind of numb's you to it though and when the oil is actually low you'll be thinking 'meh its lying again'  ;D

The OIL LACK will come on occasionally if not above half on dipstick.

Old oil in tractors can become a bit sludgey, not sure if that would affect level sensor in passenger side of sump.

Thanks for that guys. Not being complacent about such a warning but I feel better with some of you saying it does happen for no apparent reason. Just to confirm it, the old oil level is up to the top mark on dipstick. I'll keep my eye on it once I've done a service.
