Random temp gauge
« on: 18 November 2008, 21:34:35 »

Hi, I have looked but cant find a similar temp problem. Some days the temp gauge goes up to 92 ish and stays there. Heater works well, if you idle the car the fans cut in and out and all seems well. Other days, especially after a motorway run and going onto slow roads/roundabouts the temp shoots up to around 100 and never really drops back down. If you turn the engine the fans only run for a second or 2 and then stop. If you turn the ignition straight back on the temp gauge sits at 92. When you start the engine the temp goes back up to 100 ish, often in stages rather than a smooth rise.
The car runs great otherwise, it is just that the problem isnt constant as like I said some days the gauge doesnt really move of 92 where it has been for the last 5 years Ive had the car.
I have changed the thermostat and coolant and neither has helped. Was going to change temp sender as I know the gauge sender is different to ecu one (why do fans only run for 1-2 seconds on engine shutoff if temp is up by 100). Does this sound like a good idea before I strip the inlet.
Many thanks,   Al
