Exhaust Emission failure
« on: 19 November 2008, 00:56:02 »

Got a call from my brother and his 2000 has failed the MOT on the emission test.

As he will be expecting me to help sort it I'd really appreciate any imput from forum members as the most likely reasons for failure.

it is probably the exhuast and mot station should have advised him. Mine failed on emissions 3 years ago on centre section. Replaced it and no problem.

Exhaust is less then a year old, but the Cat does seem very small, engine ticking over perfectly.

 I was going to look for air air leak or could be a problem with the Lamba sensor, is there any point in cleaning the sensor?

 Any other suggestions?

Recent service inc air and fuel filters, plugs, breather/throttle body cleaned?

Has it been standing or in regular use?

Can you post the readings from the failure?

Lambda, HC and CO at idle and fast idle?

This might provide some useful clues.

You can buy a product called cat a clean/cat clean ( think thats what it's called),my mot tester reccomended it to me last feb (he does not sell it!) mine was border line and he advised using it if the emmisions did not pass on the second test,it passed so did not have to use it,think it's about the £15 mark.

This is the print out

<img src="http://i36.tinypic.com/aey4d4.jpg" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic">

I've changed air filter, plugs, cleaned breathers and it was given an "Italian job" this morning before getting back on the machine this morning and it failed again.

It has a fairly new Cat on, but it does appear to be very small. Do the Cats vary in size?

I was going to get a new lambda sensor and see if that is the problem.
