Dis Pack giving trouble?
« on: 29 November 2008, 22:21:47 »

Evenin everyone,
Were shall I start, well on my way home this afternoon from somewhere further south from me the car started to misfire on me when I tried to accelerate and caused a lack of power. Now from reading some posts on here this seems to be the dis pack that is the likely cause. Now I have three dis packs kindly donated to me from a nother oof member. The problem is I could do with some help on this tomorrow if possible, Is there anyone out there that can help me tomorrow in the safe removal of the dis pack as things like this I tend to break or damage, the most I can do is remove the plenum the rest I am not competant enough to do. Is there anyone who would be able to help me with this? Tea or coffee will be supplied to keep us warm.

Mate,

Lost you on the way back...I ignored my sat nav and turned right at a roundabout, nearly losing the arse end of the car in the process (thank god for TC).

Perhaps you should take a run down to that place further south than you and ask the man that donated the dis-paks to give you a hand, I hear he knows a thing or two :)

Best of luck mate.... :(

I was debating on wether o turn left or go straight on towards bracknell, Bracknell sounded better.

The misfiring didn't last for long just happened now and again more a pain than anything else but might attack it tomorrow if not raining.

Right I am going to get this misfiring sorted today even though its raining. I am, though its raining, going to go down to where I work at least I will keep dry, so if there is anyone that would like to come down and give me a hand your more than welcome. Where my workplace is, is on Loverock Road, The Portman centre so come on down cause if you need something done like doing your brakes once I have fininshed mine your more than welcome to do them there in the dry for helping me out.

First off

1) Have you had leaking cam covers in the past
2) What state are the plug leads in

Its worth checking the plugs and leads, check the ceramic insulators for signs of arcing (thin black lines).

I have seen this a few times, the rubber on the lead boots soaks up oil and then following a damp spell (which we have just had) you get some slight arcing....this gets worse as the arcing deposits metal on the side of the plug insulators.

Its an easyish one to check and a temp fix is easy as you simply lean the plug insulators with a scouring pad (green type). and clean the lead boots as best you can.

Worth checking before condeming a possibly good DIS pack

Thanks mark. Since I have had the car the cam cover gaskets haven't been replaced as when we took the plenum off yesterday to put another one on (longer) they were not leaking so they have been done before. The leads look ok but the second one in on the driver's side the boot is split at the bottom but never caused a problem before until yesterday on the way home but the tech 2 did show a problem with 2 & 5, no fault codes either. Plug leads are dry.

The plugs are 7 months old and the insulator is in good condition. I did go of to my work place took the scuttle off and just stared at it all for a while.........................(just looking and thinking at this point for about half an hour) then started to put the scuttle back together, so yes I bottled it. I dont drive the car that much maybe twice a month if that really so will wait until one of the big meets to come round or wait for the next Reading meet next year unless someone would like to offer there help?
