car wont start
« on: 02 December 2008, 18:48:34 »

hi all my 2.5 v6 wont start at all,it turns over fast enough but does not fire i suspected the crank sensor so i bought one but have not yet fitted it.the problem has been intermitant lately sometimes starting other times not but it always started eventually.i have done the paper clip test and only got code 73 and 31.i think 31 is disregarded and 73 is something to do with the maf sensor but what im not sure does it mean the maf is knackered or not.and would this stop the car starting?thanks

Its rare for a maf sensor to pack up unless there's an oiled type airfilter in use, I would go with the crank sensor ;)

have seen a phew posts along there lines now. General response was that crank sensor will throw all sorts of codes and sometimes not a crank sensor code. Your symptoms suggest crank sensor. Usually a bad maf will try to fire at least,  unplugging a bad maf will  usually improve running. You could un plug and see if it starts next time it plays up, but my money is on crank sensor defo. recently had the same symptoms. It was my MAf that had packed up. you can disconnect it and it will turn over and run in a default mode. Consumption will be alot lower but it will run fine for a temp measure.

31 is normal for a V6 which is not started.

i have to agree with mark, i got my omega to the point where it would just turn over very fast and not fire and changed crank sensor and it started after that... after having to empty plug holes of oil :P and end up with a cloud of smoke haha!

thanks everyone i have been out 2nite and disconnected the maf and still nothing not a flicker so i think i will deffo be changing the crank sensor in the morning,it was just that no code was showing for the crank sensor i was a bit miffed.incidently when the car was running it was a bit lumpy so maybe the maf is bieng a bit tempramental,i may just gently clean that as well

one thing at a time mate. Do crank sensor first and see how it goes. Deal with any Maf issues after the sensor is done. I used to think maf cleaning was ok, but you can bugger it if your not carefull they say on here. Dont mess until you know its def playing up and sensor is eliminated imho.
