Stalled and then Rev on its own
« on: 03 December 2008, 19:43:50 »

This one was a bit strange, Ive drove home from work in Sheffield and when I slowed down to drive through a give way road the engine stalled completly at about 10mph. Coasted to a stop put into park and she started straight away. However as I pulled up 100 yrds later she started surging on the revs from 500 to 2000 repeatedly.

I turned off the engine and waited two minuted then started again and was normal. Drove rest of way home with no problem.

Anyone got any ideas??

Nope, no engine management at all. When it stalled it was just as if someone had turned the key off.

I had the same problem with my 2.0 before I cleaned the ICV but it always brought the eml on. This was just as if it had decided not to go any furhter, but the revs were the same each time, 500 at the bottom and 2000 at the top, usually the icv fluctuated.

only reason i said about icv is because your symptoms are exactly what i had in my 2.0.... alot of the time it dyed for no reason and then very rarely it would rev it's self then suddenly drop and climb and drop.
i have a spare icv if you want to try it?

Does sound like the ICV sticking.

BTW, you can start autos in 'N' too! If it ever cuts out, just tap it into 'N', start it, then go back into 'D'. Means you dont have to stop then! :y

Ive done it when I thought the car was making a funny noise at 60mph! Just put it into N - turned engine off, then noticed that it was the car infront!  ;D So started back up, back into D and carried on!  :y

lmao!
talking of shifting in and out of neutral while moving...
i changed down manually on the autobox and went to change back to drive... only put it into neutral... anyway was midway through plonking the old right foot a bit so it revved at which point i went oofs kinda thing and put back into drive..at which point acceleration was accompanied by a repeated vibration lmao! anyway went away quickly but was a bit worrying at the time!

Ok, update!

Set off for work this morning and was fine, went approx 1 1/2 miles and then stalled. Started up drove another 3 miles no problem. Pulled up at roundabout and stalled, started up and set off and car was not dropping below 1500 revs and constantly pulling. Pulled up at lights and was at 1500 still, set off to next set of lights and it settled down and was fine the remaining two miles.

On each occasion, there was no eml but if it is the ICV where is it on the 3.0 as I have no idea.

Deffo ICV - on passenger side of engine in a clip, large rubber bung connects to engine.
