Been there... ::)

You need to take the cowling off the steering column and disconnect the little solenoid below the lock barrel.

Have a go at wiggling the gear stick around a bit as I suspect the failure is the switch in the centre console.

I just unplugged the solenoid, though, and have been meaning to have a look at the switch ever since.

When did they introduce this key lock thingymajig?

Mines an auto (1998) and I can remove the key regardless of what gear its in! Is this a facelift thing?

Need to find out why my key gets warm too!  :-/  :-?

My 99 mini facelift used to stop me taking the key out unless it was in park, i say used to because since last Tuesday i can now take it out whenever i want. It must be haunted!!

On the wifes car, it needs to be in park and you have to press the brake before removing key.

Just be thankful it's not a Saab, the key goes next to the gear lever & it has to be reverse before it will let you have the key back!

I'd start thinking about ordering yourself a new ignition barrel connector. I had this problem on my Carly GSi & my old Cavalier before they went wrong & a puff of smoke came out!

EEK! Will one from a vectra fit? Im breaking my GSi  :'(

Saabs.. Yeh very annoying! used to work at a car garage few years back, and I often started every car on the forcourt every few days (in winter). Every car (apart from the saab) I just opened the door, stuck key in and BRUMMM.... however with the saab I had to actually get in to put the key in, turn it, then stick it in neutral, then start! Grr!

The ones from Carltons & Cavaliers are different from the Omega. Not too sure about Vectras though.

I've also just been told that a warm key is the result of the barrel itself. Might need to order a new one. VX can order one to fit your key by chassis number & reg providing the ignition barrel hasn't been changed since manufacture of the car. I've just been quoted £34 or £60 for the barrel depending on what year the car is.

What's wrong with the GSi?
