Temp gauge doesn't move?
« on: 03 December 2008, 19:56:30 »

Hi,

Reading through all the recent threads on heat and temp from there omegas has got me worried. My temp gauge doesn't move if I have the heating off, not an inch. If I switch the heating off it'll climb slowly up to 80, but as soon as I put the heaters back on it goes back to the bottom. Is it bad? Going to change the thermostat this weekend. What else could it be? Blockage somewhere?

Cheers,
Iain

due to the weather.... it depends how long it's been running and what kind of speeds your driving at...the engine will run very cool compared to normal in this weather...
if there's anything wrong then it's more likely to be the temperature sender unit rather than thermostat imo.
if it's a 2.5 then i'll have a thermostat (swapping for a cool running thermostat at the weekend)
to test it, try letting the car run for a bit without the fan on or run the fan on cold to put more stress on the engine (see if it gets hot)

before i stripped my 2.0 the temp guage would rise and fall about a couple of mm with the revs lmao!

Hi,

It never used to but I noticed it happening about 3 months ago, obviously was just using the heater now and again but seems to be all the time now. Just find it weird that the temp won't move unless the heaters off :-/

dont know what model you have but if you got air con, use the eco button as it cuts out the compressor & front fans

I believe when the thermostat fails, it fails in the open position which will allow the engine to over cool.

I had a similar problem with my 2.5v6 cd a while back and it was thermostat. I tried fixing myself, but its is buried right in the guts of engine so I had to get someone else to do it for me.
